Churchill Highlights: Basketball, Wrestling Victories

Churchill Highlights: Churchill Varsity Wrestling
The Bulldogs headed to Blair High School on Wednesday, December 5 for the season opener and came away with a team win with a score of 41-32. The win was led with pins from Julian Groce, James Kalavatrinos, Matthew Schleckser and Hunter Sutton (shown in blue taking care of his opponent en route to his win). Major victories were also notched by Jake Munson and Adama Keita. Rustin Tashayyod and Panos Nicolaou also came away with wins for the Bulldogs. Churchill wrestlers then lost a close match to a highly ranked Wootton team on Wednesday, December 12 at home. This loss leveled the CHS record to 1-1. Notching wins for the Bulldogs with pins were Victor Esch (126 pounds) and Julian Groce (170). Adama Keita (160) won with a major victory. Wins were also recorded for Mitch Bloch (106), Zach Raizon (145) and Hunter Sutton (152). The Bulldogs are off to the Glenn Jones Charger Classic Tournament this weekend. They return to action locally on the 18th against Springbrook. Denise Schleckser

In the meantime, CHS Girls' Varsity Basketball beat 2-time defending state champion Gaithersburg, 57-50, on the road Tuesday night, Dec. 11. Freshman Nicole Brodkowitz (12 points), sophomore Isabella Wu (10), sophomore Japria Karim-Duvall (9), senior Alaine Thronson (8), senior Shira Racoosin (7), senior Katie Jenkins (6) and Erica Lindsay led the balanced Bulldog attack.
Churchill, bolstered by strong play from junior guard Allen Njumbe (20 points) and senior forward Bryant Wheatley (12 points and 15 rebounds), took control early and never looked back during the 66-36 victory over Gaithersburg Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Montgomery County 4A West action. Sophomore forward Jesse Locke also contributed 11 points in the victory. Shown here, Bryant Wheatley starts the game by winning the opening tip-off for Churchill.
