Olympic Rower Coaches Churchill Crew

David Banks (Churchill graduate 2001) boarded a launch and coached Churchill Crew's Varsity boys at Bladensburg Waterfront Park in September. This fall, Churchill Crew also competed in the Head of the Anacostia on Sept. 29, the Head the Potomac on Sept. 30 (when alumnus David Banks came to cheer on the team) and the Occoquan Chase on Oct. 14. After Thanksgiving, Churchill Crew will begin an intensive indoor winter conditioning program for the spring 2013 season. Matthew Reback

An early highlight of the Churchill Crew fall season was a visit by WCHS alumnus David Banks (2001), a two-time Olympic rower who competed in the US Men’s 8+ boat in the London games in July. Banks attended a Churchill Crew practice in September at Bladensburg Waterfront Park, discussing his experiences rowing for Stanford University and the U.S. Rowing team. Churchill Crew recently wrapped up its fall 2012 season at the Head of the Occoquan at Virginia’s scenic Sandy Run Regional Park. Both Varsity and Novice boats competed in this 5K course against dozens of other teams from the region. Shown here is a group photo of the co-ed club at this November 4 competition.

Sophomore David Fitzgerald competed for the Bulldogs as an individual in the State Championships at the Hereford course on Nov. 10. He finished 21st, capping a season in which he had run a personal best time of 15:45 with a 3rd place finish at the Regional Championships (shown in this photo) earlier in the month.

Sophomore Lucy Srour was the Bulldogs' top finisher Nov. 10 at the 4A State Cross Country Championships at Hereford. Srour finished 5th in a time of 19:55 and paced the Bulldogs to a fourth-place team finish. Chasing Lucy to the finishing chute were freshman Kathryn Wright (21), junior Breanna Boggan (22), freshman Fiona Asbury (58), junior Moraya Boggan (60), junior Jaclyn Dosik (71) and sophomore Katherine Kidney (131).
