One year ago today, Potomac and the rest of the DMV experienced one of the biggest shocks in recent history: An earthquake that sent thousands of people running for cover and causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Do you remember the 5.8 magnitude earthquake of Aug. 23, 2011? -- the earthquake that damaged the National Cathedral, the Washington Monument and a Potomac liquor store?

For my part, the date also marks my one-year anniversary with Patch. I remember sitting in Potomac Place Shopping Center on my first day of work in Montgomery County when the earthquake hit. I didn’t even know the numbers for Montgomery County’s emergency services yet.

What are your memories of the quake?
