Harris Teeter Confirms Plans to Open on Wisconsin Avenue
A Harris Teeter spokeswoman says the grocery chain has signed a lease for a space in the mixed-use development planned for 8300 Wisconsin Ave.
Grocery chain Harris Teeter has finalized a lease for a space in a new mixed-use development project at 8300 Wisconsin Ave., according to a company spokeswoman.
Developers StonebridgeCarras are planning a nine-story, mixed-use residential and commercial building at the 1.6-acre site at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Battery Lane, formerly the Trillium property.
Developers have said the project will include a partially below-grade grocery store with an entrance planned for a plaza at the corner of Battery and Wisconsin avenues, but Stonebridge principal Jane Mahaffie would not confirm that the grocery tenant is Harris Teeter.
"StonebridgeCarras is not prepared to announce anything related to 8300 Wisconsin," Mahaffie wrote in an email to Patch.
Harris Teeter has long been rumored to be the grocery tenant. Harris Teeter spokeswoman Danna Jones confirmed that the chain has executed a lease, but didn't have further details.
The North Carolina-based chain operates 200 supermarkets in eight southeastern states and the District of Columbia, according to a Hoovers company profile.
Many of the stores feature sushi bars, gourmet delis, cafes and pharmacies, and the company is ramping up its presence in the competitive Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, DC region, according to the profile.
Nearby locations include Park Potomac and North Bethesda.
About 300-375 units are planned for the development—all rentals—ranging from efficiencies to three-bedroom apartments, Stonebridge representatives have said. Two-level townhomes are planned along Wisconsin Avenue. The building is planned to be nine stories at its height, but will slope to seven stories on the property’s northern edge.
A rooftop pool and a green roof are additional features of the site.

I certainly hope so. Finally, a decent olive bar within walking distance.

I'm confused. Isn't another developer planning a grocery store just one bock south in the proposed 17-story 7900 Wisconsin Ave apartment building? We could use something a little more upscale like a Mom's Organics, Wegmans, or Whole Foods downtown.

Yes, there is a grocery store also planned for that development but the grocery tenant hasn't been announced.

I don't know, based on the olive bar at the Harris Teeter on NoMa, it's nothing better than what"s at Safeway, in fact, it may be worse. Prices are also significantly higher, but perhaps that's due to the DC location in an underserved neighborhood.

Prices are high at the Harris Teeter in Rockville. The quality is higher than Giant but overall I'd rather go to Whole Foods or Wegmans than Harris Teeter. (Oh, and don't get me started on the checkout experience at HT. Ugh.)

I'm excited about this. Giant on Arlington Rd is horrible and overpriced and the Safeway on Old Georgetown is just not good.

Can't wait to get my milk straight from the Teet.
