Powerball Jackpot Climbs to Record $500 Million

The next drawing is set for Wednesday night.

The jackpot for Wednesday's Powerball drawing has climbed to a record $500 million after Saturday's drawing failed to produce a winner.

The multi-jurisdictional lottery is played in 42 states—including Maryland and Virginia—plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game first arrived in the Old Line State in 2010.

Saturday marked the 15th consecutive Powerball drawing without a winner. The jackpot for Wednesday was initially announced as $425 million, but lottery officials said a surge of ticket purchases over the weekend pushed the total to $500 million.

The last time a Maryland ticket brought home a Powerball jackpot was just under a year ago. On Christmas Eve 2011, a couple who played their numbers in Cecil County walked away with a $128.8 million prize.

More recently, one of three winning tickets in March's $640 million Mega Millions drawing was sold at a 7-Eleven in Milford Mill.

The largest Powerball jackpot ever—$365 million—came in February of 2006. The lone winning ticket was purchased by eight employees of a Congra meatpacking plant in Nebraska, who opted to split the $177 million cash value eight ways.

Wednesday's drawing will be broadcast at 10:59 p.m. on WJLA (channel 9) in the DC area and at 11:22 p.m. on WBAL-TV (channel 11) in the Batimore area. Drawings are later rebroadcast on Maryland Public Television.

Did you buy any tickets? Do you split them with co-workers or friends?

I bought 10 for the first one, then 20 for the next (last one). No split with co-workers. Didn't even win anything, not even getting the Powerball, which I thihk you get a few bucks!

Who could spend it in a lifetime? I wish these winnings in say excess of 3 million, could be spread out with continuing sets of numbers until amounts were exhausted giving a set amount of cash to each. I think I might play then. Might.

I know I couldn't spend all that money, but, I could spread it around and do a lot of good.

Winners tend over time to end up worse than before they won. Still, i'd like the chance to do it right or die trying.....
