Report: Sister of Petraeus Whistleblower Owes $100K in Montgomery County

The twin sister of Jill Kelley was sued in Montgomery County court for unpaid bills.

The scandal surrounding former CIA Director David Petraeus has a connection to Montgomery County, according to a report by WBAL.

Natalie Khawam, the twin sister of Jill Kelley, is being sued for unpaid bills totaling $100,000 in Montgomery County court. The debt stems from Khawam's lawyer fees in a divorce case. WBAL reports that the suit is one and a half years old and that it halted when Khawam filed for bankruptcy.

Khawam's sister, Kelley, was reportedly responsible for the FBI's investigation into Petraeus' personal life. Kelley sent emails that she received from Paula Broadwell, the retired military general's mistress, to the investigatory agency, WBAL said.

WBAL has photos of Khawam, Kelley's twin, with Petraeus.

Correction: The spelling of Jill Kelley's name has been fixed and the headline has been changed to reflect that Kelley was sued in Montgomery County.

What basis do you have to invade this woman's private life? Just because she happens to be related to someone who is in the news? Shame on you.

No, shame on you. Please watch the news and then decide on what you want to say. This has entered national security headlines.

LW - at the time the original article was posted, NONE of the information about the sister had appeared in the news. I checked the NYT, CNN, MSNBC...nothing. So you really ought to look at the date stamp before you start criticizing.

This article describes no newsworthy connection. If you think it does, you had been starting reporting everything going on in the lives of all of Kelly's relatives.

This is a deceiving headline, she owes her attorney not Montgomery County and secondly this is not anyones business. You have know idea why she owes, could be for many reasons both good and bad. try and have integrity when posting a story.

The last name Kelley is misspelled in the hedline and the body of this piece.

Hedline is the correct spelling in the journalism world. The paragraphs are called grafs, the beginning graf is called a lede. Do you need more information?

The WBAL article doesn't say she owes Montgomery County any money.

Well, I apologize. It turns out she is in this mess at least knee-deep. Petraeus and Allen actually wrote letters of support for her in the custody battle she has had with her ex. Had your article mentioned that, I would have had nothing to say.

What a soap opera. And now it turns out that the FBI agent who started the investigation was suspended for sending shirtless photos of himself to Jill Kelley.

The hedline is still wrong. She doesn't owe the county anything. A demand for payment was made in the county court system.

She owes 100K IN MoCo. Read what it says. Not TO MoCo. And it is related very strongly to the Patraeus case. No one is delving into her personal life. Her personal life has become public since Patraeus and Allen (sp?) have written letters on her behalf. WRONG move on their part. This is PUBLIC news and of security worthiness.

However, apparently you could say she actually does owe SOME government a lot of money--the IRS, to be exact.

"This past April, Khawam filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, listing more than $3.6 million in liabilities, including $53,000 owed to the Internal Revenue Service and $800,000 owed to her sister and brother-in-law."

LW- you are NOT the author or editor, right? Just another commenter. So stop correcting and chiding every other commenter. You had inside info before others? Good. Go get a job in journalism and report it yourself.

I checked the dateline on the first Khawam story and it was 12:20 EST. Nearly an hour after I wrote my first comment.

What news source do YOU have that has credible reports that have been verified by two sources before the NYT?

Bastante - What prompted my comments were the cutting/chiding remarks you and another commentator had toward the editor of the Patch. YOU should stop being so critical and take this convenient form of information for what it's worth. That is to keep us informed of our local news. It's up to us then to research something if it gets our attention. I was critical of those who were critical FIRST and I believe it was Bastante saying, quite rudely, 'shame on you'.
You are still looking toward news sources that are unreliable, biased, and omitting.
I will continue to look at our local news from the Patch and will then choose to be as informed as I know how to.
I still knew before you knew.

They were not cutting or chiding, they were CORRECTIONS, which the editor made as a result so you can thank me for improving on the accuracy of this tiny story, which is just a poorly worded referral to a Baltimore story, in the fine tradition of HuffPo...they're aggregators, which is useful sometimes, like what I posted...no original reporting, sorry if my knowledge of journalism confuses you...

Get ova youself...you don't know what I read, I wasn't talking to you...cheers...

Give LW a medal! She knew first! What an important and incredible accomplishment! Strut your stuff, LW! You are better, faster, more reliable that the New York Times. You have inside sources that are always accurate and that always share secrets with you that no one else knows. I bow to you, oh Mistress or Master of the Universe! What an awesome life you lead.

While poor nobodies like me have to content ourselves with the unreliable and biased New York Times. Oh, I am so unworthy!

The Patch took a tiny shred of a local connection - the woman once set foot in Montgomery County! she owes money to someone here! - and decided that this ludicrous scrap made it of sufficient local interest that they should run the story. And without bothering to inform us why it was newsworthy at all. It turned out an hour later that the woman actually had a role in the Petraeus story. It wasn't just that she was related to Jill Kelley and had some tenuous connection to Montgomery County. Too bad the writer and the editor didn't write a solid story, then.

Now that it turns out she owes money to someone in Montgomery County, it STILL isn't a worthwhile local news story. It's a pathetic twist on "brushed by fame." Brushed by infamy. Barely.

LW, Re: "You're not going to get the full story reading the NYT"; where would you recommend? The Washington Times? The Fox Another-Pretty-Woman-Is-In-Trouble "news" network*?

* Note: on any given day, the FoxNews website features anywhere between 3 and 6 pretty woman in some sort of trouble. That, of course, is "news".

Bastante, I stand clarified, and thankful!

Today's hard-hitting tally:
(1) White woman Lisa Whelchel has West Nile Virus
(2) White women Supermodels with their model daughters
(3) Padma Lakshmi talks dating and food in Playboy
(4) White woman Taylor Swift is Seventeen's new love columnist?
(5) White woman Hope Solo, Jerramy Stevens marry following assault accusation, reports say
(6) White woman Brandi Glanville says tabloid coverage actually helped her when Eddie Cibrian dumped her for White woman LeAnn Rimes

Bastante and ciaf - you are spending way too much energy and time justifying your stance. I don't expect to change your thoughts and will sign off with this last comment. I have more important things to do. I would never expect you to listen to a variety of news media and THEN weigh the possibilities. You're myopic and sarcastic.
Unfortunately, you've been spoonfed a lot of misinformation and have painted me as a hater. That can't be farther from the truth but you believe what you hear and that's sad. I hope you can find it in your heart to understand others and that their opinion counts as much as yours. I form opinion on fact and seek out many avenues. There's no reasoning with people who have preconceived notions.
Bye and have a nice life and good luck in avoiding high blood pressure. Be well.

LW, my normal reading list list includes: The Economist (in my opinion the best weekly magazine), Wall Street Journal, Forbes ("The Capitalist Tool") magazine, The New York Time, The Washington Post, Wired, Scientific American, Science, Calculated Risk, Global Economic Analysis and iTulip (for Eric Janszen's research and analysis). That's off the top of my head. Beyond that, I'd be embarrassed to admit just how much time I spend reading even more widely across the internet.

My successful business (taxed at a maximum of 15%, like all S-Corps), no debt in over a decade, plenty of cycling, running, swimming and yoga keeps my blood pressure down, plus lots of free time to other things I enjoy. So thanks!

Second time you've promised to leave. I am not shedding a tear. As mouses go, you weren't all that much fun.

Before you go, however, please do share your secret sources so we can be as enlightened as you are. I have yet to see you cite a source that published an item about the Natalie Kawham involvement with Petraeus before the Patch posted its article. Not one. Put up or shut up. If your premise is that YOU knew from some secret source that no one else had access to, then my original post was valid, because I obviously couldn't have known. If your premise is that there was a published article before the Patch article, give us the link.

Bastante,
By asking LW to name the sources he uses to keep himself informed, you are showing your leftist = socialist = communist bias! You are asking a "trick question"!

For laughs, remember the hue and cry that the professional blowhards raised after this exchange between Palin and Couric:

(Couric): What newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world…

(Palin): I've read most of them with great appreciation for the press, for the media… All of em. Any of em that have been in front of me over all these years. I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news…
