Joe, I don't believe it matters what the moderator does. I believe as all polls state - about 48% to 48% each. The last 4% have not made up their mind (in my opinion), not because they don't pay attention or don't care. I believe they are voters that know the country is in bad shape, and our leader is non existent. But they must be certain that Gov. Romney is not another George Bush. This is Romney's challenge. Show that he is not President Bush. The pundits, the MSNBC lefties, the nastiness from the left will not sway them. We said that it is extremely RARE and therefore we don't need laws that make it harder and harder for the poor and elderly (who, wonder of wonders, vote Democrat mainly in the states where these laws are being suggested and passed) to vote and get proof so that they can vote.

If you find someone committing or sanctioning voter fraud, nail them to the wall! But don't you dare say that a few spread-out cases of voter fraud (usually very local) mean that we need sweeping new laws to combat it.

Regards voter fraud: The voter ID laws are not designed to prohibit anyone from voting that is a bona fide voter, rather, they are to protect the Rights of the voters (electorate) from the those that would commit fraud and diminish the power of the vote. Whenever I see a post about how rare or non-existant voter fraud is, I remeber the recent case of Democratic candidate for Congress - Ms Wendy Rosen. She thought it was just fine to vote in two different States at the same time. This is the mentality that claims there is no voter fraud.

In PA, there have been ZERO documented cases of voter fraud in the last 10 years. In June PA Republican state Rep Mike Turzai said the state's voter id law would "allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania." And how about those Clear Channel ads warning individuals against committing voter fraud? They were targetted to areas with large numbers of people of color and poor people. After an outcry from a number of groups and individuals concerned about voter suppression, Clear Channel asked the ad sponsors to put their name on the ads or have them removed. And guess what? The "family foundation" behind the ads wanted them removed rather than have to reveal themselves.

Even the CONSERVATIVE papers in our area have posted that there was no call to Obama from the Ambassador saying blunt "We need help, there are rumblings of an attack, we need more security or even soldiers!"

The ambassador just didn't do that. He called Hillary and told her what was going on. Hilary pointed out that there have been rumblings like that all across the Middle East for many years now and that if he didn't have specific intelligence information, it was his call.

Melissa, I totally agree with you. Patricia, we read the comments so we know other peoples' opinions. We respond to those comments to express our opinions. The problem here and with any other comment section of the news media is that the majority of people making comments don't make objective comments about the article at hand. They bicker, fight, yell, scream, make nasty remarks, etc. Just one time I would like to read objective comments that stay on target and run off into left field. A debate is just that, a debate. You express your opinion and the other person expresses his/her opinion, plain and simple. No need to go off on a tangent.

However, what I believe will help teachers, and education in general, is for the current (or next) president to abolish the Department of Education, and give those responsibilities back to the States. Tremendous waste of money and manpower resources federally. Both Democrat and Republican programs are largely failures from a fiscal investment standpoint. Then again, who in government cares - it's not their personal money.

The other thing that would help teachers, is good, active parenting. Somewhere along the way, these so called 'great economies' under Republican management over the past 30 years have resulted in the middle class being bled to death, and the end of the single breadwinner in the family. Kids get left behind and thrown on teachers to 'fix' them. It's not right.

More wealthy students do fine in school, just fine. School cannot make up for the rampant inequality and poverty that affects 20% of American children.

Also, there are several local govts where republicans turned down federal money to supports jobs for teachers, police officers and firefighters. How about a little history for the Middle East and Mediterranean areas. These have been under Muslim control (exerted at the point of a sword) since around 750 AD. Our problems with the Muslims started in 1776 when the British let it be known that American flag ships were no longer under their protection and hence the British treaty with the Barbary States did not apply to them. At that time, American shipping was subject to attack from Morocco, Tangiers, Algeirs, Tunis, and Tripoli. Although the U.S. did make some treaties with these States under Adams and Jefferson, they (Barbary States) could decide the terms were not met, or change them on a whim and start attacking again. While Jefferson did send ships to try to enforce the treaty, American diplomacy often worked against the military aspect. The early squadrons themselves had politically connected Commanders that led to poor performance and actually emoboldened the Barbary States to carry on attacks and increase demands on the US. It was not until Madison sent a very strong squadron with authority to both renegotiate treaties and take whatever military action the Commander deemed necessary, that the war finally ended. As a result, the US did not pay any tribute to the Barbary States, who now knew that harassing American ships would not be tolerated. Peace through strength. One of the tenents that was employed by the Muslims then was that since you pay tribute, you are either a vassal or slave.

Chrysler's bailout money is all paid up. 9.2 billion. The assessed total loss to the taxpayers on this was 1.3 billion, however Chrysler, since rebuilt, has become the fastest growing automaker in the world.

Ford had 6 billion given to them but not as a bailout. They used it retool manufacturing plants in order to better produce more fuel efficient cars. Loan repayments on the money actually didn't start until last month. Ford is no risk of going bankrupt.

As far as GM, their outstanding 'loans' to the US Treasury are all paid off...but admittedly this is ignoring the fact that the government still owns 26% of GM - 500 million shares. It can't sell the shares until GM's stock gets to around 52 dollars. If the stock does get there, it'll be all paid off. If they sold all the stock now, the government would be out about 10 billion of the 50 billion it was loaned.

So right now, GM's paid off about 80% of the total bailout money. their stock situation still makes the entire situation messy for us, the tax payers.

Keep in mind that there was a "little wave" that put the Japanese auto manufacturers on hold for an entire year. This was a huge boost to the domestic auto producers and played a significant role in their recovery.

Tthe last few years, myself and some family members have purchased cars made by foreign manufacturers. The benefit is that they are made in the USA, so American workers are getting a pay check. The Toyota and Hyundai vehicles are problem free. My son purchased a 2012 Ford truck and it has been in the shop over 4 times. Bankruptcy does not mean the business dissappears and is sold off in pieces. GM and Chrysler both went through a reorganization type of bankruptcy after getting lots of taxpayer money. Romney would have had them do that first so as to get the companies "cleaned up" for future business. During the Chrysler bankruptcy, investors holding preferred shares were not paid as should have occurred under bankruptcy law. Rather, the White House deemed that the UAW would get lots of shares of Chrysler and the preferred stockholders lost their investment. Let's not forget that President Obama fired the CEO of GM, who did not agree with him. Since when does the Federal Government have ANY authority to not only fire executives, but to tell the company how to run their business?

Some years ago, I had been a member of one of the two major parties, but after undergoing a series of attacks because of my chosen profession, I switched and became an Independent. Other than not being able to vote in the Primaries, I am free of labels and feeling as though I am attached to something that is not always right. You do understand how the electoral college works? In Maryland, where I presume most of the readers of the Annapolis Patch live, the 10 electoral votes will go to Barack Obama. There is simply no way that Romney can win the state. A vote for Romney is a wasted vote. As is a vote for Obama, as he will win by a significant margin. However, because of federal matching funds, the same funds that paid for the two conventions, if Gary Johnson gets 5% of the matching vote the party gets $90 million dollars, which would fund an actual campaign in four years. Further, until people get it out of their head that there is no chance a third party can win, they won't and we will have the same two that have been ruining this country for 160 years. I think the debate last night clearly showed that there is little substantive difference between the Democrats and Republicans. Democrats want to end wars, but then invade Libya and ratchet up drone strikes. Republicans want to reduce the deficit but pass Medicare Part D and increase defense spending. The rhetoric is fun, but the actions are distinctions without differences.
