On Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, more than 150 supporters, partner families, volunteers and local public officials gathered at The Rooftop at Rockville’s Town Center to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, Maryland, Inc. (HFH-MC). In 30 years, HFH-MC has served more than 125 families by providing affordable homeownership solutions to low-income residents of the county.

Guests enjoyed an open bar and food tastings by Buffalo Wild Wings of Rockville, La Tasca of Rockville, Oro Pomodoro Ristorante Italiano in Rockville Blackfinn American Saloon of Bethesda and sushi by Whole Foods Catering in Bethesda. Dessert fondue was provided by The Melting Po of Gaithersburg, and freshly baked cookies were donated by Mike & Cookies based out of Silver Spring. All of the food at the event was donated to show support of the restaurant community in Montgomery County of HFH-MC’s mission. Photography services at the event were donated by Paired Image in Gaithersburg.

A special proclamation was presented to HFH-MC by Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett in recognition of 30 years of building in Montgomery County. And, the Gaithersburg City Council presented HFH-MC a proclamation declaring Oct. 4, 2012, “Habitat for Humanity Day” in Gaithersburg in recognition of the 30th anniversary.

Other proclamations and citations were given to HFH-MC by representatives of United States Congressman Chris Van-Hollen (MD-8) and representatives of the Maryland State Senate. Executive Director of HFH-MC John Paukstis remarked that “we are thrilled to be recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives, state of Maryland, Montgomery County and the City of Gaithersburg. The support of our public officials is crucial to HFH-MC as we continue to grow and serve more families in Montgomery County.” 

The event raised more than $65,000 to help fund the Maple Hill project, a 19-townhouse subdivision that HFH-MC is building in Gaithersburg. Site development has started on the project, which is slated to last through early 2014. Once complete, HFH-MC will sell the homes to qualified low-income families, with a 30 year, 0 percent-interest mortgage. The goal is to improve the lives of these 19 families through improving their housing situation and providing a decent and stable place to call home.
