5 Things to Know Today: Jan. 23

Check out our calendar for more of the day's events.

Good morning, Potomac! It’s Monday morning, and time to get back to work with today’s “5 Things.” Among our offerings: weather, some interesting tidbits and a few quick notes.

1. This week will be varied with some rain and clouds during the early and later parts of the week. High temperatures may get into the 50s, while lows may drop to 30. Today we will see rain, with a high of 49, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight will be cloudy with lows dropping to 36.

2. Today we’ll have an update on police staffing levels in the county, which are some of the lowest in the area. Last week Police Chief Tom Manger met with the Montgomery County Public Safety Committee to discuss his staffing needs. Manger pointed to some of the recent burglary spikes around Potomac as illustrative of his need for more officers. Check back this afternoon for the story.

3. Last week we received a lot of letters to the editor regarding the Brickyard Road controversy, after Montgomery County issued its request for proposal to develop soccer fields at Brickyard Road. If you have an opinion you’d like to publish or if you’d like more information about posting a letter to the editor, email katie.griffith@patch.com
