Get Out: Potomac Picks for Sept. 23 – 25

Patch has a few ideas for places to go and things to do in and around Potomac.

Our first fall weekend is upon us, and Patch knows that you are ready for relaxing, celebrating, exercising and watching your favorite football team win again! This weekend’s events include a camping experience and a rare chance to see the C&O Canal after dark. Have a fun weekend and enjoy the beautiful fall weather!

 

1. DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO GO TO THE “PARK AFTER DARK” AND GIVE BACK TO THE C&O PARK THAT WE ALL LOVE AND ENJOY

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Sept. 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Great Falls Tavern in Potomac.

WHY GO: This event will feature seasonal food, music, silent auctions for “experience packages” and a chance to support the C&O Canal National Historical Park.

2. THE ENTIRE FAMILY WILL ENJOY “FAMILY FUN FEST” AT THE POTOMAC COMMUNITY CENTER

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, Sept. 23, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Potomac Community Center located at 11315 Falls Road, Potomac.

WHY GO: This event promises fun for the whole family: carnival games, prizes, laser tag, an obstacle course, pizza, hot dogs and shaved ice.

3. CONTINUE THE FUN AT THE POTOMAC COMMUNITY CENTER WITH FAMILY “BINGO” NIGHT

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, Sept. 23, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Potomac Community Center located at 11315 Falls Road, Potomac.

WHY GO: The community center will host bingo for the entire family, with an open snack bar serving pizza, sodas and snacks.

PRICING: Cost is $5 per bingo booklet (up to 15 games). Call 240-777-6957 for information.

 

4. SIGN UP FOR A BOTANICAL ART AND ILLUSTRATION CLASS

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at McCrillis Gardens located at 6910 Greentree Road, Bethesda.

WHY GO: Learn to draw many different types of plants, flowers and more.  This class is offered by Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration and was developed in collaboration with world-renowned botanical artist Margaret Saul.

5. MEET ARTIST EMIL MARKULIS AND VIEW HIS SEASCAPE PAINTINGS

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Sept. 24, and Sunday, Sept. 25, from noon to 5 p.m. An artist’s reception will take place Saturday, Sept. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Yellow Barn Art Gallery in Glen Echo.

WHY GO: Meet the artist and discuss his acrylic seascape paintings in his show called “Reflections.”

6. TAKE YOUR KIDS TO “BYE BYE BATS” TO LEARN ABOUT MARYLAND’S NATIVE BATS.

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, Sept. 23, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Locust Grove Nature Center, 7777 Democracy Blvd, Bethesda.

WHY GO: Children will learn all about the habits of native bats and how they fatten up for the winter in Locust Grove’s meadow.

7. ENJOY THE FESTIVITIES AT THE SAINTS PETER AND PAUL ANTIOCHIAN ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH MIDDLE EASTERN BAZAAR AND FOOD FESTIVAL

WHEN/WHERE: Sept. 23 - 25. Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at the church located at 10620 River Road, Potomac.

WHY GO: Show up to enjoy Middle Eastern delicacies, crafts, white elephant sale, raffles and children’s activities

8. RAISE MONEY FOR FAMILIES OF FALLEN SOLDIERS AT BUBBA’S BELLY RUN

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Sept. 25, at Bullis School, 10601 Falls Road in Potomac. The 5K Race and 1 Mile Family Fun Run begin at 9 a.m.

WHY GO: To honor Potomac native Brian Bunting and our brave military service members lost in war.

9. CAMP WITH YOUR KIDS UNDER THE STARS ON MINNIE’S ISLAND

WHEN/WHERE:  Saturday, Sept. 24, from 4 p.m. to Sunday at 10 a.m. Meet other campers at the River Center at Lock 8, 7906 Riverside Drive, Cabin John.

WHY GO: This is an adventure not to be missed. The Conservancy will shuttle campers by canoe. Cook out your dinner on grills. S’mores and a light breakfast will be provided.
