Get Out: Potomac Picks for Sept. 9-11

We've got a selection of activities to fill up your weekend.

Things are already hoppin’ around Potomac now that summer’s over and it’s time to make the most of our beautiful fall weather. If you don’t have anything to do this weekend, Patch can find you that perfect event.  Don’t miss picking those crabs one more time, riding your bike on the canal or running in a race for a good cause. This is also the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Plan to attend a memorial ceremony to honor those who lost their lives.

1.  GRAB A CRAB AND GET PICKIN' AT THE 42ND ANNUAL CABIN JOHN CHICKEN AND CRAB FEAST

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Sept. 10, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Clara Barton Community Center in Cabin John.

WHY GO: Maryland hard shell crabs, chicken, lots of sides, magic, music, entertainment, kid’s activities – and hand-squeezed lemonade.

2.  SUPPORT THE CHILDHOOD BRAIN TUMOR FOUNDATION BY RUNNING OR WALKING IN THE SUPERHEROES RUN/WALK/FUN RUN

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Sept. 11, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

WHY GO: Sign up to run/walk – or to see trampoline artists – but mainly to support the Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation.

3.  RIDE IN THE “TOUR DE CANAL” FOR THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION

WHEN/WHERE: Sept. 9 – 11 at the C&O Canal. Starting points will be determined by the length of your ride.

WHY GO: Choose between a 184, 100 or 20 mile bicycle tour along the towpath riding from Cumberland to Georgetown.

4.   LOAD UP ON NEARLY-NEW BOOKS AT THE POTOMAC LIBRARY BOOK SALE

WHEN/WHERE: Potomac Library, Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHY GO: Sort through a huge selection of nearly-new books at very low prices.

5.  TAKE AN AUTUMN TOUR OF MCCRILLIS GARDENS

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m.

6.  KIDS WILL LOVE “IMAGIFEST” AT IMAGINATION STAGE

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Imagination Stage

WHY GO: Take the entire family to see the Imagination Safari, show previews, sample classes, food and more

7.  EXPLORE THE CITY JUST ONE-HALF HOUR NORTH – AND “CELEBRATE FREDERICK”

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, Sept. 9, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. “Light the Creek” is at the Carroll Creek Amphitheater; Saturday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Up the Street” is at Market Street and Carroll Creek Linear Park, and the “Up the Creek Party” is from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Carroll Creek Amphitheater.

WHY GO: To “Celebrate Frederick” – Friday night will feature the Quiet Fire Soul Show, Saturday afternoon will host vendors on the Market Street Mile with music, food, activities and more. Saturday night features the band Junk Food.

8.  MOVE AND GROOVE AT THE 8th ANNUAL SILVER SPRING JAZZ FESTIVAL

WHY GO: Enjoy talented jazz musicians, including keyboardist Marcus Johnson as the featured artist.

8.  TAKE YOUR KIDS TO THE “BACK TO SCHOOL EVENT” IN POTOMAC VILLAGE

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Potomac Place on the corner of River and Falls Roads in Potomac.

WHY GO: Kids will love all the activities, including video games, interactive games, healthy snacks, Discovery toys and decorating book covers with members of the Churchill High crew team

9. GO TO A MEMORIAL REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY FOR THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, Sept. 9, and Sunday, Sept. 11, at 12:30 p.m. at the Courthouse Square Park in Rockville

WHY GO: Go to remember the victims of the 9/11 attacks. Local elected officials and a family member who lost a loved one at the Pentagon will participate.

10.  ATTEND A SPECIAL WORSHIP SERVICE FOR THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Sept. 11, at Potomac Presbyterian Church, 1030 River Rd., Potomac. A guided reflection, prayer and silent meditation take place at 9:45 a.m. The service will begin at 11 a.m.

WHY GO: To pray, meditate and remember the victims and families of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
