Readers' Choice: RedGate Municipal Golf Course

Patch readers in Potomac, Bethesda, Rockville and Chevy Chase chose RedGate Municipal Golf Course as their favorite public golf course in the area.

Patch readers in Potomac, Bethesda, Rockville and Chevy Chase chose (in Rockville) as their favorite local public golf course in this past week's .

RedGate beat out Needwood Golf Course (in Rockville) and Falls Road Golf Course (in Potomac), winning 52 percent of the vote, while Needwood won only 33 percent of the vote and Falls Road won only 13 percent of the vote.

"Of these 3 Redgate is probably the best. Others in the area are Laytonsville, Hampshire Greens and Northwest Park. All 3 of those 'might' be better than any of the 3 listed," Patch user commented.

"Redgate is not neutral ground. You either love it or hate it; it's a blind shot course in some places, and serious walking. I love it, but many complain," Patch user commented.

"Northwest is surprisingly nice. Falls Rd. is way better than it used to be, and they're doing more to it all the time. The range is now open until 11 pm, good move. Needwood's Executive 9-hole is a great place to introduce kids to golf," added.

Nearby, Patch readers in Takoma Park, Silver Spring, Kensington, Colesville and Wheaton chose Northwest Golf Course as their favorite local public golf course. (The other contenders were Sligo Creek Golf Course and Hampshire Greens Golf Course.)

And, Patch readers in North Potomac, Gaithersburg, Montgomery Village and Germantown chose Little Bennett Golf Course as their favorite local public golf course. (The other contenders were Rattlewood Golf Course, Laytonsville Golf Course and Poolesville Golf Course.)

With Billy Casper Golf managing the course under City ownership, RedGate will be restored to its former glory. A lot of work has already been done on greens and tee boxes, the clubhouse is being cleaned and painted, new carts are in and the staff is top-notch. Of course no matter how good the new staff is, they could never top the men and women that operated and maintained RedGate as City employees for years, some as long as 20 to 30 years. The good news...all 9 former employees have found jobs elsewhere...that's how good they are.
