In the event of a tornado, the Storm Prediction Center recommends finding a secure location on the lowest floor of your building to hunker down. Stay away from windows and glass and cover yourself with a mattress or similar padding if possible.

Staying in a car during a tornado can be dangerous. Seeking shelter under a bridge is not recommended. Instead, it is better to park your car and seek shelter in a nearby building. If a shelter is not convenient to your location, find low ground such as a ditch that is away from cars and lie flat on the ground, facedown, covering your head with your arms.
