Local Painter's Art Show Continues In Spite Of Power Outages

Dot Procter's afternoon show at The Art Gallery of Potomac took place although power outages left the area in the dark.

A lack of electricity on Friday evening didn’t stop local art patrons from visiting the Art Gallery of Potomac for the opening of Dot Procter’s showcase of artwork.

High winds left more than 1,600 Pepco customers in the ZIP code 20854 — including a majority of businesses in Potomac Village. However, it didn’t affect Procter’s opening as guests viewed the work by lantern.

Although the lack of power caused fewer guests to attend, the show displayed Procter’s colorful artwork through the darkness. Procter works primarily in acrylics on all shapes and sizes of canvas — some of which are large and square while others are narrow and long.

“Color drives my art,” Procter said.

Procter uses layers of colors in her paintings -- many of which are not framed. Procter said she likes to paint past the edge, taking the color and design all the way around to the back of the canvas.

Procter comes from a family of artists. She said her grandmother did watercolors and her mother was a printmaker and greatly influence the way she works.

“I work hard to show a strong sense of design in my paintings and this was something my mother passed on to me,” Procter said.

Karul Lasher, who said she has been friends with the artist for about 10 years, said Procter is a motivated painter that creates beautiful pieces.

“Dot is just driven to paint. She has to do it,” Lasher said.

Carol Ann Rudolph, who attended the show, said she has been admiring Procter's work for about a year.

“I am drawn to the colors and scenes in her work,” Rudolph said. “I feel she celebrates nature along with me and I am close to the places she paints.”

Procter teaches children and adults in her studio in Bethesda. For more information she can be reached at dotprocter@verizon.net or 301-320-0093.

Dot Procter's work will be on display at The Art Gallery of Potomac until March 27th.

There are several special events planned during the run of the show. For one event, she will hold a dog portrait demonstration on March 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The first one in the door with a photograph of their dog will get a free portrait painted on the spot.
