Potomac Students Perform at Strathmore Music Hall

Students from Winston Churchill High School and the Potomac area performed with Young Artists of America, alongside professional musicians, to a sold-out crowd.

 

Music lovers were given a unique opportunity to appreciate youth artistry Saturday, when Potomac students and other area musicians performed a combination of opera, musical theater and oratorio at the .

The sold-out show titled "Villains" was sponsored by Young Artists of America, an organization that aims to fill a void in youth musical education by giving talented high school and college age artists the opportunity to be mentored by professional musicians and perform large scale works for opera and musical theater. Saturday's concert consisted of musical selections depicting some of the most wicked villains in the opera and musical theater, including "Sweeney Todd," "Les Miserables," "Pagliacci," "Phantom of the Opera" and "Tosca."

All of the orchestra and a good share of Saturday's vocalists are from Potomac and , according to Jane Coyne, a founding director of the group.

The relationship among the musical genres was a key aspect of the performance, breaking down the barriers that often separate them. For example, a song from "The Phantom of the Opera" was juxtaposed to one from "Pagliacci" to illustrate the similarities between musical theater and opera.

James Harp, the artistic director of Lyric Opera Baltimore, hosted the event. Guest soloists included Jonathan Carney, Jason Stearns, Jennifer Jellings and Monica Soto-Gil.
