Benny's Bar and Grill Serves up Fresh Fish, Fries and More

Two months after opening, Benny's Bar and Grill in the Cabin John Shopping Center in Potomac is doing brisk business and planning for the future.

The restaurant (at 7747 Tuckerman Ln., Potomac)—with its classic retro decor and black-and-white photos of Hollywood stars up on the walls—makes all of its food in-house. Chefs make the bread, rolls, doughnuts and french fries...and fillet the fish. There are no frozen or pre-made foods in Benson Fischer's kitchen.

One of the restaurant's specialities is french fries, which are freshly made—about 800 to 1,000 pounds of potatoes are made into french fries each day, Fischer told Patch.

Because the restaurant's two french fry-cutting machines weren't keeping pace with customers' french fry orders, Fischer recently ordered a new, $16,000 machine that will cut through 500 pounds of potatoes in 15 minutes, Fischer said.

Right now, Benny's is serving lunch and dinner, but Fischer has plans to introduce breakfast and a take-out counter soon.

This Saturday will be the restaurant's first live music night, featuring jazz musician Bill Stat and The Turning Point starting around 9 p.m.

Fischer is looking for groups to perform at the restaurant on Thursday through Sunday nights. Interested musicians are invited to email Fischer at fcompanies@aol.com.

The restaurant's retro, 1940s decor is "in keeping with the era of the restaurant’s namesake, Fischer’s late grandfather Benny Bortnick, a boxer, wrestler, referee and restaurateur who lived in [Washington, DC]," Bethesda Magazine reported.
