Local Businesses Offering Free Doughnuts on National Doughnut Day

Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme are offering free doughnuts on Friday!

First created in 1938 in honor of the women who handed out doughnuts to soldiers during World War I, today, National Doughnut Day, will be honoring hungry customers with free doughnuts.

The national doughnut chain, Dunkin Donuts, is serving up free doughnuts with the purchase of a medium drink on Friday. Another doughnut giant, Krispy Kreme, will be giving away one free doughnut of any variety on Friday.

Salvation Army volunteers began providing doughnuts to soldiers stationed in France from huts near the front lines in 1917. In 1938, the Salvation Army started celebrating National Doughnut Day as a way to raise money during the Great Depression.
