A beloved American institution, burger news topped much of Bethesda's foodie news this year. Most of the headlines were BGR antics, but a few new businesses opened and an election was predicted in 2012:
Bobby's Burger Palace to Open in Montgomery Mall (Oct. 16, 2012) -- Bobby's Burger Palace, the burger chain launched by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, soon will be open at the Westfield Montgomery Mall.
BGR Burger Named Third Best In World (Dec. 3, 2012) -- To taste test a world champion burger, look no further than BGR. The Burger Joint's entry in the World Burger Championships last month took home third place—and the title of third-best burger in the world. "The World Champion" is a prime, dry-aged burger topped with bacon/onion jam, fried egg, cheese and pineapple, according to BGR representatives. Earlier in 2012, BGR made headlines for its dedication to pop culture when it celebrated the birth of Snooki's new baby Lorenzo with -- you guessed it -- a signature burger.
Earlier during the summer, burgers met Olympic-fever when BGR came out with Katie Ledecky “Gold Standard Fries.” Ledecky made a splash on the international scene with her stunning Olympic win, and the rising Stone Ridge sophomore’s fan base has been steadily growing at home and abroad. The fries, dubbed “Katie Gold Standard,” were on sale in August.
BGR Marks National Cheeseburger Day with Slider Eating Contest (Sept. 17, 2012) -- In honor of National Cheeseburger Day, Bethesda’s BGR: The Burger Joint challenged hungry souls to eat as many cheeseburger sliders as their stomachs can handle in a 10-minute time-frame. Each contestant sat behind a pile of 50 cheese sliders and competed to win a cash prize.
Hamburger Hamlet To Launch Joint Venture With Du-Par's (Nov. 28, 2012) -- Bethesda’s Hamburger Hamlet is launching a joint venture with Du-par’s, a bakery and coffee shop that’s been a fixture in the Los Angeles dining scene since 1938.
On a related note -- like burgers, "burrito" starts with a "b" -- burritos predicted the 2012 presidential race. Or was the race won by burritos?
California Tortilla Burrito Bowl Poll Predicts Presidential Election Results (Nov. 6, 2012) -- California Tortilla asked their patrons to vote with their tastebuds this election season. The Bethesda-born and Rockville-based California Tortilla debuted its 2012 Presidential Burrito Bowls in August. In November the chain announced that Obama’s Chicken Teriyaki Luau Bowl had claimed a sweeping victory over Romney’s Mexican Mitt-Loaf Bowl, including "swing state" victories in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
