Cabin John Resident Wins SECU Scholarship

Also participating in the ceremony were: SECU President and CEO Rod Staatz; Dr. Allen Cox, Managing Director of the Maryland Coalition for Financial Literacy; Dr. Maddy Halbach, Director of the Howard County Public School System Academy of Finance; and Van Brooks, founder of the Safe Alternative Foundation for Education, Inc. (SAFE).
To be eligible for SECU’s State Employee Scholarship Program, students had to be Maryland state employees or members of the immediate families of Maryland state employees. Winners had to be enrolled or accepted into a college, university, trade, or technical school. Twelfth graders who plan to attend college next fall were also eligible.
“The State Employee Scholarship Program reflects SECU’s continuing commitment to financial and scholastic education, as well as the special relationship SECU has always enjoyed with state employees,” says Peggy Young, Vice President of Marketing at SECU.
According to Young, SECU has awarded more than $210,000 in scholarships over the past seven years to Maryland state employees and family members participating in the State Employee Scholarship Program.
In keeping with SECU’s core values which encourage employees to donate both time and resources to support numerous community events and charities each year, participating students in this year’s Scholarship Program had to write a 750-1,000 word essay – or for the first time ever, create a 1-2 minute video – in which they described their experiences in helping their own communities or those in need. If currently in high school or college, each participating student also had to submit a copy of his or her transcript or most recent report card.
