University of Maryland, College Park, and The Universities at Shady Grove, Together with Montgomery College, Launch 'Terp Transfer' Scholarship

Students in U. of Md., College Park, Programs at USG Eligible to Apply for Need-based Aid Program

Students at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) who transfer from Montgomery College into any of the undergraduate programs offered at USG by the University of Maryland, College Park, may now be eligible for tuition assistance through successful completion of the new Terp Transfer Partnership program. Students that qualify for the scholarship will receive financial assistance of $5,000 for their first academic year upon transferring to any University of Maryland, College Park, program offered at USG. This amount will cover the increase in tuition costs from Montgomery College to UMCP, which will allow students to focus on their academics, rather than the increased financial burden and alleviate debt due to student loans.

Launched as a pilot program in spring 2013, USG partnered with the University of Maryland, College Park and Montgomery College, to create this innovative gateway to some of UMCP’s most sought-after academic programs. The Terp Transfer program is designed to benefit students who transfer from Montgomery College, to complete a bachelor’s degree at USG in any of the UMCP undergraduate programs offered there. These include Biological Sciences, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Public Health Science, and four programs in the Robert H. Smith School of Business.  The Terp Transfer Partnership is expected to include more than 100 students for the 2014–2015 academic year.

“Transitioning from a two-year college to a four-year university can be financially daunting for students,” said Sarah Bauder, UMCP Assistant Vice President of Enrollment Services Operations “The collaboration between Montgomery College, UMCP and USG – through the Terp Partnership Program -- streamlines the transition process and helps to alleviate the financial burden for deserving students.”

“Our latest partnership with the University of Maryland, College Park, and Montgomery College is incredibly important, as we continue to provide more opportunities for students to complete a bachelor’s degree without leaving Montgomery County,” said Dr. Stewart Edelstein, executive director of the Universities at Shady Grove and associate vice chancellor for the University System of Maryland. “The University of Maryland, College Park’s generous contribution of these scholarship funds is integral to our students’ success.”

The Terp Transfer Program identifies students who have established education goals and then supports the students every step of the way, as they transfer from Montgomery College to complete a UMCP degree program at USG. In addition to guaranteed admission to a UMCP degree program, students benefit from tuition discounts and application fee waivers, and gain early access to USG’s Career and Internship Services Center for career-preparation workshops, and internship and professional opportunities, even before they are officially a student in a UMCP program at USG.
