5 Things to Know Today: Aug. 23

A look at the five things to know to begin your day in Potomac.

Happy Tuesday, Potomac. To quench your thirst for bites of information, here's today's list of five things you need to know:

1. Oh my, we are in for another exqusite day with lots of sunshine and highs in the lower 80s. The evening will be mostly clear with lows in the upper 50s.

2. If you didn't have a chance to watch this video on our site today, it's well worth your time. More than 50 Montgomery County firefighters climbed the North Bethesda Market East Tower on Saturday . Firefighter T.J. Monahan, of Station 33 in Potomac, organized the event. I was teary-eyed by the end of the video. The events of 9/11 are forever etched in my memory.

3. Coming up later today is a review of the highlights of my favorite stories on the county fair that a few of our Montgomery County Patch sites covered. Our summer intern, Scott Maucione, produced two nice videos: one on a 4-H club member and another on those classic deep-fried treats.

4. is also this evening—where you and the kids can catch two free live stage shows of Silly Bus along with balloon art and more activities. Here's something adults will enjoy: A free kids meal will be given with purchase of an adult entree at participating restaurants (see website for list). Shows start at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Please note this is the final Kids Night of the summer season.

Here's one more thing to make your child smile. On Tuesday, kids receive a FREE donut with an adult purchase at the Fractured Prune in Rockville Town Square.

5. Now here's a tale filled with drama. On this day in 1814, first lady Dolley Madison saved a portrait of former president George Washington from being plundered by British troops during the War of 1812. I'm utterly amazed by Madison's courage and her loyalty to Washington—to the office of the presidency. Three cheers for a former first lady!
