5 Things to Know Today: Aug. 24

An historic earthquake and Hurricane Irene spins its way towards the East Coast.

Good morning, Potomac. I trust that you are safe and sound after yesterday's earthquake. Here are five things to know today:

1. It will be another delightful day: sunny with highs in the mid-80s. The evening will be clear then become partly cloudy. Temps will dip into the mid-60s.

Keep an eye on Hurricane Irene's track. If you have beach plans, you will want to pay close attention. The National Hurricane Center forecasts Irene making landfall in the Carolinas and then moving north along the coast.

2. It's at . Parents/Guardians and students, the evening's events begin at 6 p.m.

3. If you are planning to visit the Washington Monument, consider an alternative. Seems that pesky earthquake may have caused some cracking in the stones at the top of the monument, according to NBC4. A structural inspection will be done today to evaluate the cracks and determine how to repair them. The National Park Service will decide when the monument will reopen.

4. How about something unusual and entertaining? The third annual Uke Fest is coming to the Music Center at Strathmore as part of its Summer Outdoor Concert Series. Bring your blanket or your favorite lawn chair, and arrive with ukulele in hand for the pre-show strum from 6-7 p.m. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Strathmore is hoping to break the Guinness World Record for the largest ukulele gathering of strummers. Sounds fun, don't you think?

5. Dan Haas (lounge pop) headlines The Rockville Town Square Summer Wine Down series from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Enjoy wine tastings, food sampling from La Canela and Carbon Peruvian Chicken & Grille, live music and more. Proceeds from the wine tasting portion of this event will benefit the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County.
