5 Things You Need to Know Today: July 15

Your daily digest of need-to-know information about Potomac.

Good morning, Potomac! It's (finally) Friday--and here are another five things you need to know today to stay on top of what’s going on in the community.

1. A bonus day of beautiful weather is on tap--high temps today will again be in the mid-80s, with the humidity staying comfortably low. Winds will be light from the SW about 5 MPH. Tonight will remain mostly clear with temperatures falling into the 60s.

2. More weather fun: With today's clear sky and atmosphere, it should be near-perfect viewing conditions for tonight's full moon. Did you know all the full moons have names, originating with Native Americans from this region of the country? July's full moon is called the "Full Buck Moon" (for the month when buck deer sprout new antlers), or "Full Thunder Moon" (aptly named for this month's frequent thunderstorms). See all the full moon names here.

3. Harry Potter frenzy is in full-tilt (in case you missed the news, somehow)--the much-anticipated screenings began at midnight, with some showings as late as 3:00 a.m! In case you or your kids couldn't find online tickets, couldn't endure the long lines, happened to be sleeping at 3:00 am (like most of us), or just want to see what all the fuss is about--not to worry: Potomac Patch has a rundown of today's local showtimes and locations to help.

4. If Harry Potter isn't your style and you want to get out for fun this evening, how about traveling to the Bumper Car Pavilion at  to try "blues dancing." is holding dances featuring live entertainment at venues in or near Potomac tonight and all weekend, as part of its "Red Hot 'n BBQ" event. If you don't know how, don't fret--beginner's dance lessons are included as part of the fun. There are also late-night (1:00-5:00 a.m.) dances tonight and Saturday at Bethesda's ; and an afternoon party and BBQ competition Saturday in Tilden Woods Park, with meat and vegetarian divisions (worth a trip just for that).
