5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 1

It's the first day of June, so get up and get informed about what's going on in Potomac.

Get up and get ready for another day in Potomac! Today’s five things you need to know today include what’s going on in June, construction in Potomac Village and a chance to get free pizza!

1. After several hot days, it looks like Potomac could be cooling off with some rain. Showers and thunderstorms could hit the area between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and again before 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Otherwise, expect another day of hot temperatures with a high near 94 degrees and a low around 64 degrees.

2. Expect some delays on River Road near the intersection of Falls Road as construction crews will begin day two of the between the Sunoco and BP gas stations. While construction will not take place during rush hour, one lane on each side of the median on River Road will be closed down during construction. The new median will have stamped concrete that will look like bricks to match the nearby businesses.

3. Is that pomp and circumstance we hear? It’s a big day for seniors at Wootton High School because at DAR/Constitution Hall. Don’t forget, if you have a graduate in the class of 2011, you can on Potomac Patch for free! There’s not better way to brag about your grad and let people know about his or her accomplishments.

4. It’s the first day of June and it will be a busy month in the area.

  • It’s the month of graduations galore! For a full list of public school graduations in the county, check out the Montgomery County Public School’s full list.
  • June is Caribbean Heritage Month. Montgomery County will kick off Caribbean Heritage Month today with a free concert of steel pan music and dance performances from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building, located at One Veterans Place in downtown Silver Spring.
  • The U.S. Open is coming to the area! The golf tournament will kick off on June 13 at Congressional County Club in Bethesda, just outside of Potomac. The tournament will go until June 19.
  • Don’t forget your dad! Father’s Day in June 19, so be thinking of ways to give back to the main man in your life.
