5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 7

Get informed about what's going on in your own backyard with these five things!

Rise and shine, Potomac! It’s another day with another five things you need to know in the community. Today’s five things include information about saying goodbye to old schools and embracing new schools, reading in another language and eating at a reduced price.

1. But first, we can’t neglect the weather! Today will be sunny with a high near 89 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. This evening will be mostly clear with a low around 68 degrees. Sounds like perfect weather for an outdoor barbeque to me!

2. has been a staple in Potomac since it was built in 1967, but the community is embracing the new school that will soon take its place. From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the community is invited to come say goodbye to the school, which will be torn down and rebuilt over the next 18 months.

3. And Beverly Farms isn’t the only school getting a look. is hosting a community meeting at 7 p.m. to discuss the school’s modernization, which is scheduled to happen during the 2014-2016 school years. The school will be torn down except for its new wing, and students will attend Radnor holding school on River Road in Bethesda while it is under construction. Community members are invited to attend this meeting at the school and offer input.

4. If you speak Chinese or want to practice, join the meeting at the at 6 p.m. This month’s discussion will be of "The Audacity of Hope" by Barack Obama. Didn’t have time to read this month’s selection? Join the book club on July 5 as they read "Story of Pan" by Nan Shi.
