5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 17

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Potomac! Let’s kick the day off right with the five things you need to know to keep you ahead of the game.

1. Grab your green clothes, your pot ‘o gold and a lucky shamrock — it’s St. Patrick’s Day! While the day may spark celebration, it actually marks the day Saint Patrick —a Christian missionary, bishop and apostle of Ireland — died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland. Patrick, who was made the patron saint of Ireland, supposedly used the three-leaf clover, or shamrock, to describe the Holy Trinity.

2. You couldn’t ask for a nicer day, too. It’s going to be sunny with a high near 64 degrees. The low will be about 47 degrees this evening and winds should only reach about 8 miles-per-hour, according to the National Weather Service.

3. Stop by this afternoon for special St. Patrick’s Day treats like corned beef and cabbage with Guinness mustard, Sheppard’s pied with mashed potatoes, beer battered cod and traditional Irish lamb stew. Item on the menu are available while supplies last, so get in early.

4. The is hosting at 10:30 a.m. This free event will feature stories, songs and rhymes for 3 to 5-year-olds and their caregivers.
