Get Out: Memorial Day Weekend Picks

A look at some of the things going on in Potomac this weekend.

Memorial Day begins your summer - and it’s time to kick back and kick off the warm, lazy days of June, July and August. Summer means relaxing outdoors and making each day special. With so many fun things to do, it’s nearly impossible to choose. But get ready for a fabulous three day weekend: Patch has ideas for each day, so let’s get going!

1. HURRY TO ROCKVILLE’S HOMETOWN HOLIDAYS

WHERE/WHEN: Rockville Town Center on Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

WHY GO: Hometown Holidays includes free concerts by Bob Schneider and George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic, huge art and craft festival, entertainment, kids activities (moonbounce, Safari Experience, Cars Speedway, Turbo Tubs, Whirley Bird and Double Lane Slide), teen party and more. For information and event times, call 240-314-5000.

WHERE/WHEN: Rockville Town Center, Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

WHY GO: Sample delectable treats from Kickin’Chicken, Spice Xing, Austin Grill, La Tasca, Oro Pomodoro, Armands, Seasons 52 and other yummy Rockville eateries.

3. DON’T MISS THE 67th MEMORIAL DAY PARADE, CONCERT AND CEREMONY

WHERE/WHEN: Rockville Town Center on Monday. Rockville Band and Chorus begins at 9 a.m., the ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. and the parade is at 10:30 a.m.

WHY GO:  To honor our United States troops, pay tribute to America and remember our loved ones through patriotic music, a wreath-laying and traditional parade.

PRICING:  Free

WHERE/WHEN: Locust Grove Nature Center on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

WHY GO:  Join Jay Jones, Locust Grove volunteer and member of the Maryland Ornithological Society, for an early morning ramble through Cabin John Regional Park. Jay has been birding for over 45 years and will enthusiastically share his knowledge of the local bird scene. Children ages 10 and older are welcome to attend, with adult supervision. Remember to bring your field guide and binoculars. Please note, if Saturday morning brings rain or poor visibility the walk will be moved to the following Wednesday at the same time and location.

5. HIKE, CLIMB AND ENJOY THE VIEWS ON BILLY GOAT TRAIL

WHERE/WHEN: Park across from and the trail begins a short walk from parking. The trail is divided into three sections and each is about 1.7 miles long.

WHY GO: Scramble over and around huge boulders and climb a cliff face to a gorgeous view of the Potomac River. Walk through the forest and along the towpath, enjoying the birds and nature at its finest. For information, call  301-767-3714.

6. BEAT THE HEAT BY SPLASHING AROUND IN A NEIGHBORHOOD OR MONTGOMERY COUNTY POOL

WHERE/WHEN: Neighborhood pools are opening this weekend and many are offering special prices, so check them out. Montgomery County has great pools. Bethesda Swimming Pool on Little Falls Drive is the closest county pool to Potomac.

WHY GO: Swimming is fun, healthy and great exercise for the entire family. Swim lessons, Master’s Swim programs, kiddie and tot pools and water slides are available at many pools. For information call 301-652-1598.

PRICING: $3.50 to $6. Season pool passes are available for $195 and more.

 

7. RUN TO PRESERVE OUR CAPITAL CRESCENT TRAIL AT THE “SAVE THE TRAIL 5K RACE”

WHERE/WHEN: Saturday at Elm Street Park, 4601 Willow Lane, Chevy Chase, 9 a.m.

WHY GO: Raise money for the Friends of the Capital Crescent Trail to preserve the trail and to fight the construction of the Purple Line light rail.
