Get Out: Potomac Picks for Aug. 19-21

Here's some hot ideas for cool activities in and around Potomac this weekend.

Summer lingers on—and Patch has innovative activities to wind down your summer before school starts up again and your days are not so carefree.

Enjoy walking, canoeing or kayaking on our nearby C&O Canal. Or take your family to Glen Echo for a carousel ride, a picnic or to see a children’s show. Or maybe you will visit one of Montgomery County’s pools—or venture to Sandy Spring for a zip-line adventure. 

Patch has listed some other fun activities for your summer days, so head out and enjoy one of the last weekends before the hustle and bustle of the fall sets in.

WHEN/WHERE: Through Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 500 Perry Pkwy., Gaithersburg. Open from 10 a.m. to midnight.

WHY GO: Everyone loves the carnival rides, farm animals, midway, games, lawnmower racing, racing pigs and goats, vintage super tractor pull, monster truck madness, demolition derby, all kinds of yummy food, and more!

2. CLEAN UP OUR WATERWAYS WHILE ENJOYING A RIDE IN A CANOE

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon at the River Center at Lock 8, 7906 Riverside Dr., Cabin John.

WHY GO: Protect our waterways by picking up trash from a canoe. Following the cleanup, picnic on Minnie’s Island. You bring your lunch, and dessert will be provided.

PRICING: Free. Register at tricarico@potomac.org. Let them know if you need a canoe or have your own.


3. SHOW OFF YOUR FANCY FOOTWORK AT THE TEA DANCE IN THE SPANISH BALLROOM

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Aug. 21 from 3-6 p.m. at the Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo.

WHY GO: Join the Hot Society Orchestra of Washington for an afternoon of dancing to music from the '20s, '30s and '40s. Dance the foxtrot, two-step, waltz, cha-cha, rumba, swing and more in the Spanish Ballroom. A basic dance lesson at 3 p.m. for all levels is followed by dancing to wonderful live music from 3:30-6 p.m.

4. TOTE YOUR TOTS TO CABIN JOHN MALL TO SING-a-LONG WITH MR. DON

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, Aug. 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Cabin John Mall Atrium.

WHY GO: Mr. Don’s educational and entertaining shows will enthrall your toddlers. This show is a “don’t miss!”

5. LISTEN TO THE VOICES OF THE RIVER WITH REED MARTIN, BANJOIST

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Aug. 21, 4-5 p.m. at the River Center at Lock 8, 7906 Riverside Drive, Cabin John.

WHY GO: Reed Martin, winner of old-time banjo contests for 30 years, will play an old claw-style banjo to the beat of the river. Come enjoy storytelling and pictures while listening to the music of the banjo on the steps of the River Center.

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Aug. 21 from 1-6 p.m. at 8565 Horseshoe Ln., Potomac.

WHY GO: Stop by to meet Nick Maravell and tour the Potomac farm. Maravell has farmed 20 acres on Brickyard for more than 30 years to develop a "county organic incubator." The county is in the midst of a process of seeking a contractor to build and operate four soccer fields encompassing the site. The party will feature live music, refreshments, farm tours and children’s activities.

PRICING: Free, but donations will be accepted. RSVP or volunteer to help at volunteer@savenicksorganicfarm.org

7. TALK WITH ARTIST GINA COCHRAN AND ENJOY A DEMONSTRATION

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, Aug. 19 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Exhibit 9 Gallery in Potomac.

WHY GO: Enjoy Gina Cochran’s exciting art and have the opportunity to interact with her.

8. ZIP LINES PROVIDE A FUN ADVENTURE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

WHEN/WHERE: Sandy Springs Adventure Park, 16701 Norwood Rd., Sandy Spring, MD.

WHY GO: Zip through the trees on cables from platform to platform. Your kids will love zipping down the lines through the forest. Ages 7 and up.

PRICING: $38 for ages 7 to 9, $43 for ages 10 to 12 and $48 for all ages above 12. Group rates are available. Tickets are valid for three hours. Call 240-389-4386 for information.
