Hot picks for cool activities in and around Potomac.

The last weekend of August is upon us, so what are you going to do? Montgomery County Public Schools begin this Monday, and this is the last weekend before homework, school activities, soccer games, and bedtimes. 

Everyone’s back in town and things are gearing up—including Hurricane Irene. (You might want to plan both indoor and outdoor activities.) Patch is providing you with some fun ways to spend the last weekend before the realities of fall set in.

2.  SHOP TILL YOU DROP AT THE FALL CHANGE-OVER SALE

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Aug. 27, through Wednesday, Aug. 31, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Montgomery County Thrift Shop, 7125 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, MD.

WHY GO: Bargains galore as the shop clears out old merchandise.

3.  GET ROCKIN’ WITH POP-ROCK ARTIST ANTHONY SNAPE

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Aug. 28, at Moore Music House Concerts, Rockville, MD.

WHY GO: See folk artist Lori Kelly and singer-songwriter Anthony Snape in a small intimate atmosphere.

4.  SWING DANCE TO THE GOLDEN SOUNDS OF COUNT BASIE

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Aug. 27, from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Spanish Ballroom of Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD.

WHY GO: The Tom Cunningham Orchestra will present BASIE NIGHT. Swing and Sway to Count Basie’s smooth rhythms. Swing Dance Lessons begin at 8 p.m. followed by dancing.

5.  LEARN TO DANCE THE ARGENTINE TANGO AT TANGO BRILLANTE DC

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Aug. 28, in the Spanish Ballroom Annex of Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD. Lessons from 6:15-8:15 p.m. Dancing from 8:15-11:15 p.m.

WHY GO: Learn all the graceful moves of the Argentine Tango, and then practice them on the dance floor.

PRICING: $15 with lessons. $10 for dance only.

 

6.  SIT OUTSIDE ALONG THE LAKE, RENT A PEDAL BOAT—AND ENJOY THE MUSIC

WHEN/WHERE: Washingtonian Center and RIO Shopping Complex, 9811 Washingtonian Blvd., Gaithersburg, MD. Friday, Aug. 26 ,from 6-9 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 27, from 6-9 p.m.

WHY GO: Both the Lake Front Area and the Rio (near Dick’s Sporting Goods) have live music for your enjoyment. The two areas are near each other and walking along the lake on a pretty evening is a must. Swan pedal boats are also available for rent—a lovely idea with your sweetheart or your little ones.

7.  LEARN ABOUT MONTGOMERY COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AT THE “BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIR”

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Aug. 27, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville, MD.

WHY GO: Learn about the school system and resources for helping your child learn. Meet with MCPS staff and pick up materials to enhance your child’s learning. There will also be entertainment, music, health screenings and children’s activities. Students in need can pick up backpacks filled with school supplies.

8.  OOH AND AAH OVER THE BRAND NEW CABIN JOHN MIDDLE SCHOOL

WHEN/WHERE:  Monday, Aug. 29, from 6-8 p.m.

WHY GO: Tour the newly built Cabin John Middle School to see the latest in school architecture and technology. A pizza dinner will be provided by the PTSA with support from Potomac Pizza and Baskin Robbins.
