Get Out: Weekend Picks April 29-May 1

A look at some of the great things to do this weekend in Potomac.

May Day is upon us – as is Spring at its finest. The dogwoods and cherry trees are in full bloom and you are thinking about flowers for your garden, playing golf, tennis, riding your bike, putting the top down on your convertible and getting outside to have fun with family and friends. Patch has you covered with lots of exciting and fun activities. So get going, it’s the weekend and you are ready to play, enjoy the warm sunshine and find some fun entertainment.

1. Winston Churchill High School “Toast Churchill’s Success” Gala, Fundraiser, Silent Auction and Raffle

 WHERE/WHEN: Bolger Center, 9600 Newbridge Dr. at Democracy Blvd. Friday at 7:30 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m. to view auction items.

WHY GO: Presented by the Churchill Boosters Club, all proceeds go to the school's athletics. Have a fabulous evening while supporting Potomac’s outstanding high school. The event includes Dinner with “Celebrity” Servers.

WHERE/WHEN:  Falls Road Golf Course, Friday at 1 p.m., shotgun start.

WHY GO:  Golf Tournament sponsored by the Bullis Alumni Association.

PRICING:  $175 per golfer, $75 for Bullis employee or young golfer. Sponsorships available.

 

3. Winston Churchill High School Carnival

WHERE/WHEN:  on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

WHY GO: Games, fun and entertainment for the family.Enjoy food from Potomac Pizza, Robeks and other local restaurants, jump around on the moonbounce and play games to win fun prizes. Parents, check out the Silent Auction for great gifts. Profits go to the Save the Children Organization, which has been supported for the past two years by the SGA.

PRICING: Admission is $2 and activity tickets are 50 cents each.

 

4. Landon Azalea Garden Festival

WHERE/WHEN:  Landon School, 6101 Wilson Ln. in Bethesda. Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WHY GO:  Tour the stunning Perkins Azalea garden, purchase azaleas and other plants and flowers, explore unique boutiques, dine on enticing food and enjoy the entertainment. All proceeds support Student Financial Assistance and Faculty Enrichment.

PRICING:  Free


5. Family Day at Glen Echo Park

WHERE/WHEN:  Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHY GO:  Celebrate the opening of the Park's historic Dentzel Carousel for the 2011 season and enjoy artist demonstrations, magic shows, family dancing, Irish dance performances and instruction, tours by National Park Service rangers and $1.25 carousel rides.

6. Bullis School One Act Plays

WHERE/WHEN: 's Blair Center for the Arts Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m.

WHY GO:  Enjoy one-act plays performed by Bullis students. This show is only for high school age and older because of mature content. For information, call 301-299-8500.

PRICING: Tickets $4.

 

7. Potomac United Methodist Church Talent Show

WHERE/WHEN:  Sunday. Pizza will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the talent show will start at 6:30 p.m.

WHY GO:  See Potomac United Methodist’s finest talent perform in a casual atmosphere.

PRICING:  Free

 

8. River Center at Lock 8 Opening Day Celebration

WHERE/WHEN: River Center at Lock 8, 7906 Riverside Dr. in Cabin John on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

WHY GO: Celebrate the opening of canal activities. Potomac Conservancy Birder’s Breakfast and Migratory Bird Walk with Paul Hagen at 7:30 a.m. For information call 301-608-1188 ext 204.
