Get Out: Weekend Picks June 17-19

The U.S. Open is Potomac's major event of the week, to be attended or avoided, depending on your interest in golf.

U.S. Open, one of golf's most exciting events, takes place at Congressional Country Club on River Road. But that means – so if you want to avoid the stop-start war zone, then travel Falls Road or MacArthur Boulevard and stay away from River Road, Bradley Boulevard and Seven Locks Road. Patch has some great activities for you to consider if you are avoiding the golf tournament. Since Sunday is Father’s Day, take Dad to a baseball game, and summer concert or just have fun hanging out together.

2. GET THAT ISLAND FEELING WHEN YOU SWAY TO REGGAE AT THE POTOMAC PLACE SUMMER CONCERT

WHERE/WHEN: Potomac Place Courtyard on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHY GO: Unity Reggae will entertain the Saturday morning crowds as they relax and grab coffee or a bite in Potomac Village.

PRICING: Free.

 

3. TOTE YOUR TODDLER TO CABIN JOHN MALL TO SEE FLUMPA THE TREE FROG

WHERE/WHEN: Cabin John Mall Atrium on Friday at 10:30 a.m.

WHY GO: Flumpa the Tree Frog and Wendy the “Singing Scientist” will delight your pre-schooler with their science, music, fitness and fun. For information call 240-779-8000.

PRICING: Free.

 

4. ATTEND THE “OPERA TO POP” CONCERT AT THE BETHESDA SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL

WHERE/WHEN: Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 7611 Clarendon Rd. on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

WHY GO: Hear young professionals, high school and college students perform opera and pop hits. For more information, call  301-985-5911.

5. HEAD DOWN THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD TO SEE “THE WIZARD OF OZ”

WHERE/WHEN: Puppet Company Playhouse in Glen Echo Park on Friday at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

WHY GO: Your children will love the tabletop puppets, marionettes and moving-mouth puppets who present this classic story. Call 301-634-5380 for more information.

PRICING: Tickets are $10 for adults and children.

 

6. MEET ARTIST EDITH SIEVER AND VIEW HER SHOW “LYRICAL HUES”

WHERE/WHEN: Yellow Barn Gallery in Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd. on Saturday with an artist reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

WHY GO: Meet the artist while viewing her collection. For information:  301-371-5593.

7. GET ON THE “BIG TRAIN” TO SEE FABULOUS LOCAL BASEBALL

WHERE/WHEN: Cabin John's Povich Field at Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

WHY GO: The undefeated Big Train will play the Rockville Express on Saturday and the Maryland Green Hornets Basketball Team will also perform at the Green Hoops for Hope Extravaganza. On Father’s Day, The Train will compete against the Herndon Braves. For information call 301-983-1006 or purchase tickets online.

PRICING: Tickets are between $2 and $7.  - $2.00 - $7.00. All kids in baseball, softball or scout uniforms admitted for free.

 

8. TAKE DAD TO BRUNCH, LUNCH OR DINNER AT A LOCAL POTOMAC RESTAURANT

WHERE/WHEN: Try some of the great local restaurants with your dad. Try Park Potomac, the Potomac Woods Shopping Center, Cabin John Mall or one of Potomac Village’s finest.

WHY GO: Quality time is worth every minute! Spending time with Dad is the best present you can give him.

PRICING: Sky’s the limit when it comes to seeing Dad happy!
