Get Out: Weekend Picks May 13-15

A look at the things to do in or near Potomac.

It's Thursday and you're looking forward to the weekend... and an empty planner. If you're looking for things to do, we've got you covered! Patch will tell you where to go and what to do. Fine Art, Horse Races, gorgeous Potomac homes to tour, educational barge rides  – all on this weekend’s agenda along with other interesting and enjoyable activities. 1. TAKE A PEEK INSIDE GORGEOUS HOMES AT THE POTOMAC SPRING HOUSE TOUR

WHERE/WHEN: May 14, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 15, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Woodmont Triangle along Del Ray, Norfolk and Auburn, Bethesda

WHY GO: Check out unique arts and crafts, taste food and wine from Bethesda restaurants and enjoy music and entertainment all day long. Kids area with Kids Dance Parties by Joy of Motion 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For additional information call 301-215-6660.

3. TAKE OFF RUNNING OR WALKING AT THE BULLIS GIVES BACK 5K RUN/2.5K WALK/400M FUN RUN

WHERE/WHEN: May 15, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at .

WHY GO: Bring the whole family to this 5K Run/2.5K walk, and Fun Run. The event benefits Stepping Stones Shelter in Rockville. The 400 meter Fun Run for children under 5 years old, will be a great way to get the kids involved. Children’s games and activities will be led by Bullis students. Come out to exercise, listen to music and complete for prizes– all for a great cause. Register online or call 301-299-8500 for additional information.

4. ENJOY THE SPORT OF STEEPLECHASE RACING AT THE POTOMAC HUNT RACES

WHERE/WHEN: May 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Kiplinger Estate in Poolesville.

WHY GO: The thunder of hooves, the soaring of horses, a car show, moon bounce, pony rides – something for everyone is at this Montgomery County horse country tradition. Proceeds will benefit the Yellow Ribbon Fund which supports our wounded warriors. Order tickets online.

PRICING: $30 per vehicle to $200 per sponsor.

 

5. TAKE A RIDE ON THE C & O CANAL BARGE AT GREAT FALLS

WHERE/WHEN: Rides are Wednesday through Sunday at the Visitors Center, Great Falls Park beginning May 15 at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

WHY GO: Venture back to the 1870s on this mule-driven barge ride through the locks of the canal. This ride is enjoyable and educational for all ages. Call 301-767-3714 for additional information.

PRICING: Adult are $8, seniors are $6 and children are $5.

 

6. PICK UP SOME FANTASTIC BOOK BUYS AT THE POTOMAC LIBRARY BOOK SALE

WHERE/WHEN: , May 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHY GO: Huge selection of nearly-new books for cheap prices      

PRICING: $1 for hardback books, $.50 for paperback books   

 

7. FEED THE BIRDS AT LOCUST GROVE NATURE CENTER

WHERE/WHEN: May 14, 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

WHY GO: Help fill bird feeders and learn what food the different birds like to eat. This is a great activity for kids ages 1 and up.  Call 301-765-8663 for information.

PRICING: Free.

 

8. PARTICIPATE IN VOLUNTEER NATURALIST TRAINING AT LOCUST GROVE NATURE CENTER

WHERE/WHEN: May 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

WHY GO: Modeled after the very successful training program initiated by Black Hill Visitor Center staff,  these classes are for sharing and learning for current volunteer naturalists and for those who would like to know more or become volunteers. Be sure to bring binoculars and water. This program is for 18 years and up. Be prepared to walk, investigate, get your hands dirty and share your knowledge. 9.  LADIES NIGHT AT STROSNIDER’S HARDWARE– BETHESDA

WHERE/WHEN: May 15   6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Strosnider’s, 6930 Arlington Rd., Bethesda

WHY GO: Give-a-ways, raffles, demonstrations, brand representatives from Weber, Soda Stream, Miele, Krups and more, and up to 15% discounts throughout the store.

PRICING: Free.

 

10.  ROCK OUT AT THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS

WHERE/WHEN:  Lower Gym on May 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

WHY GO: Come check out six talented bands, singers and rappers. Cheer your favorite band on while rockin’ to the music. Call 301-469-1200 for information. Benefits the Churchill Sophomore Class.
