Grab and Go Kid's Planner for the Weekend of March 11

Things to do with the family this weekend around Potomac.

Where/When:   Nature Exploration Area, Locus Grove Nature Center, Cabin John Regional Park, 7777 Democracy Blvd.
Why Go:  The space is designed to let children engage in free exploration with nature's loose parts. There is a sand pit for digging, logs and blocks for building, tubes for musical exploration.  Carved wooden bears and a snake encourage climbing, and a footbridge crossing an imaginary stream encourages imagination. Let your children freely explore this special space designed just for them.

Why Go: Students can expand their horizons and learn about diversity not only in Potomac, but also in the world. Students and their families will share displays on the different countries represented at Cold Spring Elementary School.

• CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY EARLY

Where/When: Ri Ra Irish Pub, 4931 Elm Street; Flanagan’s Harp and Fiddle, 4844 Cordell Ave; The Irish Inn at Glen Echo, 6119 Tulane. Before March 17.

Why Go: St. Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Christian concept of the Holy Trinity. The day in his honor is a great opportunity to learn about Irish culture and traditions.  Take the kids to a pub this weekend, BEFORE the crowds descend, for Irish music and food.

THE CAPITAL STEPS

Where/When:  Walt Whitman High School, 7100 Whittier Blvd, Bethesda. Sunday March 13 at 7 p.m.

Why Go: Join the Capital Steps, a Washington-based troupe of one time Congressional staffers, for an evening of music and political satire. Proceeds benefit the Post Prom Party.

Pricing: $30 general admission, $25 MCPS students and teachers

 

THE LARAMIE PROJECT

Where/When: Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS Auditorium, 4301 East-West Highway. March 11, 12 & 18 7:30 p.m., and March 19 at 2 p.m.

Why Go: A challenging and important night out for families with children ages 13 and up, The Laramie Project is often used as a method to teach about prejudice and tolerance. It focuses on the reaction to the homophobic murder of a college student in Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. The play is divided into three acts, and 14 actors portray more than seventy characters in a series of short scenes.
