Keep Cool and Save Energy This Summer

Pepco shares some ways to keep your house cool without hurting your budget.

Summer’s heat may get you down, but don’t let it deflate your wallet, too.

When temperatures are in the 90s, air conditioning is a great refuge, but there are other ways to cool down without letting your bank account feel the brunt. Saving energy this summer can translate to saving money, so try these tips from Pepco on how to keep cool and save money:

  • Check the air filter. When the weather's hot, a central air conditioner can account for 30 percent of your energy bill. Pepco recommends checking the air filter regularly. A clear air filter improves the system’s efficiency—which ultimately means energy savings.
  • Set the thermostat at 78 degrees. It may be hot outside, but Pepco suggests setting the thermostat at 78 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is an energy-efficient indoor temperature, Pepco said. (Another tip: turn on an indoor fan to circulate the air, which will make it feel cooler but use less energy).
  • Call a professional. Have a professional check your air conditioning system to make sure it works properly and is not leaking coolant. Sure, it costs money to have a professional visit, but it could save you in the long run.
  • Lock that cool air in the house. Be sure all windows are shut and outside doors are closed when the air conditioning is on.
  • Keep heat sources away from the thermostat. Don’t put any lamps, televisions or other heat sources near the air conditioner thermostat, Pepco recommends. Heat from those types of appliances can cause the air conditioner unit to run longer than it should.
  • Don't block ducts. Make sure your furniture or other household items are not blocking ducts or fans. When the ducts are blocked, the cooled air can’t circulate freely, making for a stuffy house and increased bills trying to cool it.
