Mark Shriver Writing Book about Father, R. Sargent Shriver

The book will be published next May and will focus on 'Sarge's Principles' and growing up in the famous family.

Mark Kennedy Shriver, a well-known Maryland politician and a member of the famed political clan, has signed a contract with Henry Holt & Co. to write a book about his father, R. Sargent Shriver — a former Peace Corps director and vice presidential nominee who lived in Potomac for more than two decades.

Schriver will write a book to be published in May 2012, which is tentatively titled “A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sarge Shriver,” according to a release from Macmillan—a global publisher of books and owner of Henry Holt & Co.

According to the release, the book will be about “Sarge” and his influence on Mark’s life. In this book, he will “celebrate a man widely praised by family, friends and presidents alike as a warrior for peace, and as a devoutly spiritual person whose guiding principles in life were unwavering faith, hope and love.” according to the release.

Sargent Shriver is widely credited with creating the Peace Corps in the early 1960’s and laying the groundwork for President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty, creating widely-hailed programs such as Head Start, the Jobs Corps, Legal Services and others. Also, he ran as the vice presidential candidate on the ticket with George McGovern against Richard Nixon in 1972 and also ran for president. He served as U.S. Ambassador to France from 1968 to l970. Mark Shriver, who ran unsuccessfully against Chris Van Hollen for the Democratic nomination for the 8th District House seat in 2002, is a seasoned politician and strong campaigner in his own right.

Shriver currently is senior vice president of U.S. Programs at Save the Children, benefiting more than 80,000 children in this country.

In 1994, he ran successfully for the Maryland House of Delegates and spent eight years in the state legislature from 1995 to 2003.

Mark is the fourth of his Sargent Shriver's five children with the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the sister of the late president John F. Kennedy and founder of the Special Olympics.
