Patch Picks: 'Staycation' Ideas Near Potomac

You don't need to leave town to have a great time. Here is a list of some of the great "staycation" options in the area.

If you’re looking for a fun get-away, you don’t have to go too far! The “staycation” is a perfect way to escape the same-old routine and enjoy some attractions without even leaving the area.

Potomac Patch has assembled a list of some great “staycation” ideas that will prove that you don't need to leave town to have that fun vacation experience. But the list doesn’t end here. Be sure to add your other favorite “staycation” options in the comment section below.

1. Chesapeake and Ohio Canal- Swing by the C&O Canal in Potomac to connect with nature and spend a little time outdoors. Whether you enjoy backpacking, bird watching or boating, this National Historic Park is sure to be a great way to relax. The park also has camping grounds and beautiful nature walks, including the Billy Goat Trail, a 4.7-mile hiking trail that follows a scenic path between the canal and the Potomac River.

2. See the Cherry Blossoms- The National Cherry Blossom Festival is in full swing through April 10. View the pink blossoms from a Tidal Basin paddle boat; daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 202-479-2426 for more details about this adventure. Take a guided evening walk with National Park Service rangers to see the blossoms lit by Japanese lanterns on Fridays through Sundays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and call 202-426-6841 for more details. Enjoy live music and nautical-themed activities at the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival April 2 from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cap off the day by watching the National Cherry Blossom Festival Fireworks Show April 2 at 8:30 p.m.

3. Solomons Island Kite Day- Celebrate the arrival of spring at the Calvert Marine Museum's annual Solomons Island Kite Day in Glascock field, across from the museum. On April 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. test your flying skills and learn fancy maneuvers from members of the Wings Over Washington Kite Club. Expert kiters will give demonstrations on super kites and offer flying lessons. Bring your own kite or make one at the museum. Kite kits will be on sale for $5 each, cash only. Admission is free and open to the public. General museum admission not included.

4. Frederick Historic Tour- Take the family up to Frederick for the day or even spend the night in one of the area's bed and breakfast hotels. Tour the historic sculptures and monuments, visit the fallen firefighter memorial park and take a guided walk through a Civil War battlefield. There are plenty of unique boutiques to occupy the antique lovers in your family and restaurants featuring live music for evening entertainment. 

5. Little Bennett Regional Park- Just a short drive away in Clarksburg, this 3,700-acre park features 20 miles of trails, a campground and a golf course.
