Potomac Residents, Maryland Leaders React to Osama bin Laden's Death

Local leaders and residents are speaking out with how they perceive Osama bin Laden's death and what it means for the country.

American flags waved in many Potomac streets on Monday after President Barack Obama confirmed on Sunday night that U.S. Forces killed Osama bin Laden, leader of terrorist group al-Qaida.

Potomac residents, like many other Americans, celebrated the death of bin Laden and shared their feelings about how it will affect the country.

Hewitt Rose, a Potomac resident, said bin Laden’s death was a victory for the nation.

“I was glad to see it happen,” Rose said.

Although bin Laden’s death is a triumph for the United States, it will not change the terrorist organization, said Jay Smith.

“Bin Laden’s mission was accomplished long ago and his mission will long outlive him,” Smith said. “I’m glad they killed him, but it doesn’t change anything.”

Other residents were conflicted when it came to celebrating bin Laden’s death.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate to celebrate death,” said Matthew Holland. “I’m not disappointed with the outcome, but I just don’t think celebrating death is the right thing to do.”

Many Maryland leaders took the day to thank the men and women of the Armed Forces for their contributions.

“This closes a sad and tragic chapter in our country and our world’s history,” said Gov. Martin O’Malley. “Commend the men and women of our Armed Forces and the dedicated public servants of our nation’s security agencies. This should be a day of reflection and prayer for a more peaceful future.”

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) said the death of bin Laden is a milestone in the fight against terrorism.

“Osama bin Laden was a murderer who devoted his life to the destruction of freedom, democracy and our way of life,” Cardin said. “Tonight all Americans can feel safer knowing that bin Laden is dead, but we must remain vigilant in the continued fight against al-Qaeda and any terrorists who seek to harm our nation.”

Other elected officials released statements, too:

Rep. Andy Harris (R- MD):

“Last night, President Obama announced that American forces had killed terrorist and 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. This is great news for the security of America, as well as for our troops at home and overseas who continue to protect us from terrorism every day. I want to thank and congratulate all of our men and women in the Armed Forces – their hard work and bravery made this possible. This is a great day for the United States of America.”

Rep. C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger (D-MD):

“This is a great day for America. Bin Laden was a threat to the United States and a threat to the world. Bin Laden had the blood of thousands of people on his hands. Justice has now been done.”

Rep. Christopher Van Hollen Jr. (D-Dist. 8):

“The fight against al-Qaeda is far from over and we must remain vigilant, but yesterday the terrorist network lost its founder and leader. It was a good day for America and for all those throughout the world who work for freedom, justice, and peace."
