Week in Review: Coach's New Job, Sports Bracket and New Superintendent

A look at the top news in Potomac from May 8 through May 14.

Potomac’s news from this past week included stories about a local coach’s new job, sports competitors, a new superintendent and local teacher's achievements in special education.

Churchill High School’s boys basketball teams will be down one important team member after Associate Head Coach Kevin Jones announced this week he will be  for the boys basketball team at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac. Jones will begin training in the next few weeks in preparations for the team’s 2011-2012 season.

In other sports news, the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association posted on Wednesday with many Churchill teams participating. The boys and girls lacrosse teams have byes into the next round, while boys baseballs and girls softball began their match ups on Friday.

Joshua P. Starr signed paperwork on Wednesday making him the . Starr will succeed Jerry D. Weast, who steps down on June 30 after 12 years at the helm of the largest school system in Maryland.

at an event hosted by the Special Education Sub-Committee of the Montgomery County Council of Parent-Teacher Associations. Awards were given to outstanding students, parents and educators who work to help special-needs students overcome learning obstacles. Gretchen Solender, who teaches at , was recognized as an Outstanding Educator. Another Wayside teacher, Donna Russo was recognized as an Honorable Mention Educator.
