Week In Review: House Fire, Lacrosse, Rally for the Cure

A look back at the top news from this past week in Potomac.

This week in Potomac a house fire dominated the news, but other top stories involving pets, sports and fundraising stood out.

On Sunday, a house fire took place at 8106 Whites Ford Way and . Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to the fire and found that the inhabitants, an 85-year-old man and an 87-year-old woman, suffered from smoke related injuries. The 85-year-old male was transported to a local hospital with 10 percent burns on his body and smoke inhalation — injuries that could be potentially life threatening. While putting out the fire, a firefighter sustained a small burn on his shoulder and was transported to the hospital.

The fire started because a cigarette was not properly discarded in the den. The couple smoked non fire-safe cigarette meaning that it did not extinguish itself when left unattended.

On Tuesday, a Potomac non-profit organization, in Montgomery County and back the development of an animal shelter in the county. Allan Cohen, the chairman of MCPAW spoke at the County Executive Building in front of County Executive Ike Leggett, County Councilmembers and government officials to unveil the model of the county’s new animal shelter, which will be named the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center.

For the first time in ’s history, a coach has won a in one season. On Wednesday, the Gazette named Bulldogs Boys Basketball Coach Matt Miller the "Coach of the Year,” only a few weeks after he received the same title from MoCoSportsFan.com and GameDayMD.com. Miller said the honor would not have been possible without the team and his staff.

“It’s an honor, but in the end, your players have to do the work for you and you can’t get an accolade like that without high character kids who work hard,” Miller said.

On Friday, the and Potomac Pilates to help raise funds for breast cancer research and prevention. The event, which will took place at the Tennis and Fitness Club and Potomac Pilates studio, helped increase awareness of breast cancer in the Potomac community and allowed people to enjoy a little tennis, cycling or Pilates.
