Week in Review: Possible Hate Crime, Fatal Fire and Car Crashes into Storefront
A look at the top news this past week in Potomac.
Potomac’s news this week was dominated by a possible hate crime, a car that drove through a local business and a fatal fire.
On Sunday night, a of with what police believe to be a BB gun. One window each was shot out at two other businesses in the Potomac Woods Shopping Center and Julius West Middle School — both with BB pellets at the scene. Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime because of it proximity to Passover, which began Monday evening.
On Friday afternoon a of -- a children's clothing store in the Potomac Place Shopping Center. An elderly man driving the car was transported to a local hospital for a check up after he clipped the side of the walkway and drove through the front of the store, said Beth Anne Nesselt, a spokesperson with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

A man after his Potomac house caught fire early Sunday from an accident while cooking. At 4:40 a.m., Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at 8509 Scarboro Court in Potomac. Firefighters searched the residence and found two victims -- both males believed to be in their mid 70s, said Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham. The homeowner was not conscious when firefighters found him and was transported to a local hospital where he died Sunday morning from injuries sustained in the fire. The other victim suffered from minor smoke inhalation and is in stable condition at a local hospital.
On Wednesday, a on I-270 South between Old Georgetown Road and I-495 East, causing back up for several hours. There were no reported injuries from this incident.
