Week in Review: Residents' Experiences, Finger Vein Scanner and Valentine's Day

It’s been a busy week in Potomac filled with news about its residents, the community centers and the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday.

On Monday, Potomac Patch ran a story submitted by one of its readers about returning from Egypt amidst political unrest. Potomac residents, Fern Krauss and her husband, traveled to Egypt last week, and the trip ended prematurely after the riots that enveloped Cairo spread to other cities around Egypt. The couple had a difficult time returning home when the Egyptian government cut off the Internet, so they relied on family members to book them flights back home. detailed account to get the full story.

On Tuesday, there was a story about how for renting bedrooms in their house in the Falls Farm subdivision of Potomac to sub-leasers. The Falls Farm Homeowners Association said Jean Huynh, who owns one of the single-family homes in the subdivision with her sister, is violating the association’s rules by renting rooms in their home and operating a boarding house. The Homeowners Association is holding the family responsible for about $30,000 in legal fees.

Montgomery County Department of Parks is working to assure the community that the and other area rinks are after the "Today" show aired a segment on Thursday about the lack of detectors at such facilities. The "Today" show report covered how people have been poisoned because of the carbon monoxide emitted by the fuel-powered ice resurfacing machines like the ones used in Montgomery County.

This week the site ran a story about how the is part of a pilot program where patrons can — a technology that could save the Department of Recreation about $50,000 if implemented countywide. With the current system of printing access cards, the printer and scanner for the process costs $5,000. The finger vein scanners are $300 each.
