Where to Go in Montgomery County to Seek Shelter from Hurricane Sandy

Montgomery County shelters open at 12 p.m.

Montgomery County will open its storm shelters today beginning at noon, according to a government press release.

Shelters will open at the following locations:

  • White Oak Community Recreation Center -- open for people and pets -- 1700 April La., Silver Spring
  • Activity Center at Bohrer Park -- people only -- 506 S. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg
  • Mid-County Community Recreation Center -- people only -- 2004 Queensguard Rd., Silver Spring


If you're headed to a shelter this afternoon, don't forget necessary items, including prescription medication, important phone numbers, personal pillows and blankets. The White Oak shelter will be staffed by the county animal services division and open for dogs, cats and small animals including rabbits and guinea pigs, according to the release.

Montgomery County parking garages and lots will stay open Monday and Tuesday at no charge, the release said. There will also be no charge at county on-street meters.
