Speak Out: Are You Meatless on Mondays?

The Montgomery County Council officially recognized the trend as part of a 'healthy lifestyle.'

While it probably won’t change the availability of steak at your local grocery store, Montgomery County Council members officially decried meat—for one day of the week, at least. “Meatless Mondays” was given a proclamation by the council on July 18.

“We have to model the behavior that we want to promote, especially when we are dealing with issues related to healthy lifestyles, animal welfare and environmental stewardship,” said Councilwoman Valerie Ervin (D-District 5) of Silver Spring. “Meatless Monday is a terrific way to highlight not only the health benefits of a plant-based diet but the fact that such a diet has been shown to use fewer resources and cause less pollution.”

For the uninitiated, “Meatless Monday” is a campaign aimed at reducing the consumption of meat, specifically red meat and pork, in the American diet by shying away from the food one day of the week. It is an initiative of The Monday Campaigns, a nonprofit in association with the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Maxwell School at Syracuse.
