Groundbreaking Set for Scotland Rec Center

The new recreation center is slated to be finished by the fall of 2014.

Potomac's Scotland neighborhood should have a new, energy-efficient recreation center by the fall of 2014.

The existing Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center (at 7700 Scotland Dr., Potomac) is to be "completely removed and the new neighborhood center ... will feature a new two-level structure that features a new gymnasium, two multi-purpose activity rooms, game room, weight and exercise room, spacious social hall and much more," according to a statement from the Montgomery County executive's office.

The facility will be designed in accordance with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines for LEED Silver certification, the statement added.

"We are excited about breaking ground for this replacement of the Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center," county Recreation Department Director Gabriel Albornoz said in a statement.

"Staff members in the departments of Recreation and General Services are working hard to build a first-rate facility that will provide the community with quality recreation programming," he added.

The current facility is about 40 years old, Potomac Patch reported in 2011.

The center serves a diverse group of children from the Potomac area as well as families who live in Scotland Community, Potomac Patch reported in 2010.
