Get Out: Holiday Weekend Edition

This weekend: Hanukkah Wonderland, Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," and a holiday art show and sale.

Where/When: Travilah Square Shopping Center (10066 Darnestown Rd., Rockville, MD). Friday, Dec. 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.

Why Go: Friday's events include challah-making, a potato man activity and iron bead art. Saturday's events include a Hanukkah party with live music, food and drink plus games and prizes. On-going events include a kids' play area and a dress-up station. Menorah, dreidel and picture frame crafts will be available for a fee. Read more about the event on the online flier.

Why Go: The adaptation of Jane Austen's novel chronicles the lives of the Bennet family, in particular the five daughters as they experience romance and the pitfalls of pride and prejudice.

Frank Capra's Holiday Classic "It's a Wonderful Life"

Where/When: (8633 Colesville Rd, Silver Spring, MD). Friday, Dec. 23, at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 24, at 12:30, 3:05 and 8:30 p.m.

Why: A guardian angel named Clarence shows Bedford Falls resident George Bailey just how wonderful his life is in Capra's luminous black-and-white film.

Price: $11.50 general admission, seniors (65+) and military $9, and $7 children 12 and under.

 

Where/When: White Flint Mall (11301 Rockville Pike, North Bethesda, MD). Friday, Dec. 23, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 24, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Why Go: Santa Claus is at the White Flint Mall for visits and portraits. On Christmas Eve, reindeer feedings will take place from 1-2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. while Santa takes his breaks. Ride the North Pole Express daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Price: Children and their families may pose with Santa for a variety of portrait packages available from a professional photographer. The North Pole Express costs $1.50 per ride.

 

Holiday Art Show and Sale at Glen Echo

Where/When: Glen Echo Park (7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD). Saturday, Dec . 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Glass, ceramics, jewelry, photographs, paintings and more will be available for viewing and purchase in the Popcorn Gallery.

Price: Free (purchasing crafts will cost money, however).

 

Where/When: Washington D.C. Mormon Temple (9900 Stoneybrook Dr., Kensington, MD), Thursday, Dec. 22, through Tuesday, Dec. 27, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Why go: More than a half-million lights illuminate the temple's grounds. Enjoy nightly musical performances featuring local artists and musicians each evening at 7 p.m. in the Visitor’s Center, as well as crèche displays from around the world. See website for schedule.
