Churchill's Sutton Wins Second State Championship

Hunter Sutton, Sophomore Wrestler at Winston Churchill High School won his second Maryland state public school championship in the 138 pound weight class.

 

Hunter Sutton, sophomore wrestler at won his second Maryland state public school championship at Cole Field House at the University of Maryland March 3 in the 138 pound weight class.

Sutton entered the tournament seed first in the bracket with a 34-2 record for the year. He won his first three matches with a cumulative score of 21-2 to bring himself to the finals against Antwan Reddick from Duval High School, ranked third in the seeding. Sutton had never wrestled Reddick before since he haila from a different region of the state. He started cautiously and managed to get the first take down with an inside trip. Sutton successfully used the inside trip to take down Reddick a total of three times and ultimately won the match 10-6.

With the win, Sutton has tied the record for second most state championships by an individual wrestler, set by Brandon Shapiro in 2002 and 2003.  If he wins next year, he will tie Danny April’s record of three state championships, set in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
