The best things in life aren’t things.

Sermon excerpt

I was recently shopping at a discount store when suddenly a removable wall sticker caught my attention. It read, “The best things in life aren’t things.” I suddenly had a moment of reflection.  I thought to myself, “What ARE the best things in my life and are they really things?” As a minister you would expect that the initial imagery in my mind would be of a supreme being (God) seated on a big white throne, but the truth is that it wasn’t. Not because I don’t consider God to be the best in my life, but beucase He is the reason I live and breathe to me he is life itself. My initial thought was rather of the four human beings that sit on four old wooden chairs around my dinner table every evening. I’m referring to my wife, my two sons and my daughter. To me THEY are the best gift God has given me in this life. Oh, and yes I bought the sticker as you can see on my home-office wall.

How about you? What do you consider to be the best things in life? The word “best” implies that they are “above” all other. Are they material things, people or experiences? Maybe you don’t put as much interest on earthly possessions as other people do, so it may not be things. Or, maybe you don’t feel you have enjoyed any great thing in life, so it’s not any particular experience. Perhaps you’ve been abandoned and/or hurt by some people or someone, so you don’t consider anyone in particular as “the best” in life. Whether you can positively answer the question or not the truth is that we all need some sense of frequent satisfaction in order to consider something pleasurable in this life. Granted, there are many things that can bring happiness, fulfillment and peace of mind, but when any of those things come from this physical world they will inevitably come to an end, even family.

The Bible tells us to “Set our hearts on things above not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:2). This speaks of spiritual things, which are eternal and of perishable things, which only last for awhile. Even though people, things and experiences can be part of the best things in this life nothing will ever compare to the joy, love, peace and hope we can find in the Author of life himself. And no, I am not refering to religion. RELIGION, in theological terms, is man’s way to reach God. Instead, I am refering to God’s way to reach man, which is through RELATIONSHIP and He has made this possible through faith in the person of Jesus Christ his Son (John 14:6).

There are certainly many good things in life like: family, friends, a successful career, smart phones and chocolate, but you will never experience the BEST in life until you’ve experience the love of God. Call on Him. Get to know Him. He wants to have a relationship with you.

“Every good and perfect gift comes from above.” (James 1:17)
