Great Falls Tavern Entrance of C&O Park Closed

The National Park Service has closed the Great Falls entrance of the C&O National Historical Park due to flash flooding.

The Great Falls Tavern entrance of the C&O National Historical Park is closed through Friday due to flash flooding in the park.

Rising water from park streams and the C&O canal caused some flooding of trails and scouring of the towpath, but no major damages, according to Peggie Gaul, education specialist and acting public information officer for the National Park Service.

Barring any more issues with flash flooding, the park plans to reopen the entrance and the visitor's center Saturday morning. The canal boat will remain closed through the weekend as canal safety is assessed. The following park features will also remain closed Saturday:

  • The Gold Mine, Ford Mine and Billy Goat trails will be closed.
  • Parking areas at Penny Field Lock, Violettes Lock and Rileys Lock will be closed.

According to Becky Curtis, program manager of the trust, Lockhouse 10 is positioned high enough on a hill that it wasn't affected by flooding. Maintenance staff worked through the storm getting the lockhouse ready for the preview, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
