Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched just before 1 p.m. to a two-story home on the 11000 block of Stanmore Drive, according to MCFRS spokesman Cpt. Oscar Garcia. Fifty-five firefighters put out the bulk of the fire in 15 minutes, Garcia said.

Nineteen-year-old Katie McGowan says she was in the area when the fire broke out and called 9-11 to report the incident.

“I was biking up Stanmore Drive when I noticed some dark colored smoke coming from the left side of a house,” McGowan said. “I stopped biking, looked over at the house and quickly realized that the smoke was growing larger and darker every moment. A few seconds later, I could see orange and red flames through the window."

McGowan said firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes of her call, but that during those minutes the fire quickly spread.

“There were flames pouring out the windows, the column of smoke was huge and I could hear loud noises, almost like explosions or loud pops that I guess might have been the windows exploding,” McGowan said. “The firefighters quickly started putting out the flames and broke down the door -- the dog that lived inside bolted out, thankfully unhurt. “

No occupants were inside the house at the time of the fire, and no injuries have been reported, according to MCFRS. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire and damage estimates, Garcia said.
