UPDATE: Man Dies in Potomac House Fire

A fire on Scarboro Court in Potomac caused about $400,000 damage and killed the homeowner.

Update, 3 p.m.: Montgomery County Fire and Rescue have determined the fire started on the kitchen stove top, Assistant Chief Scott Graham wrote in a press release.

A total of 65 Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel were called to the two-story house at 8509 Scarboro Court at 4:35 a.m. They found heavy fire in the kitchen area on the first floor.

One elderly unconcious man was found on the second floor. He was transported to Suburban Hospital and advanced life support treatment was initiated immediately but he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to the release.

A second elderly male was found in the house and was treated for smoke inhalation.

The survivor said they had been cooking. A heavily damaged sauce pan was found on the stove top, according to the release.

"It appears the fire burned for some time before being seen by the neighbor after it vented through the kitchen window," the release said.

Fire and Rescue crews brought the fire under control in 25 minutes. The name of the deceased male has not yet been released.

Original Post, 10 a.m.: One man died on Sunday morning after his Potomac house caught fire early Sunday.

At 4:40 a.m., Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at 8509 Scarboro Court in Potomac. Firefighters searched the residence and found two victims -- both males believed to be in their mid 70s, said Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham.

The homeowner was not conscious when firefighters found him and was transported to a local hospital where he died Sunday morning from injuries sustained in the fire. The other victim suffered from minor smoke inhalation and is in stable condition at a local hospital.

The cause of the fire and its origin are not yet known at this time, although investigators are currently working at the scene, Graham said.

Structural damage to the house is estimated at $300,000 and damage to contents in the house is estimated at $100,000, Graham said.
